William R. ‘Bill’ Jeffers, 79, died Sunday, Nov. 14 of cancer at Memorial Hospital, Modesto.

He was born in Oklahoma and at age six moved from there with his parents and grandfather. He graduated from Oakdale High School in 1949 and Modesto Junior College in 1951, where he excelled in basketball.

Mr. Jeffers served three years in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

He owned the Oakdale Credit Bureau for more than 30 years until retirement. After retirement, he enjoyed golf and traveling by automobile to visit friends and to see other states.

He was very active in local civic clubs and activities. He served in various positions, including president of the Lions Club and also was very active in the Oakdale Sportsmen’s Club where he served as president and was treasurer for 33 years.

He was well known statewide for his trap shooting expertise. He was very caring and helped many people over the years. Patience was one of his virtues.

He is survived by his sons, Bill, Jr. (Vicki) of Manteca, Mike (Martha) of Oakdale; daughter, Cynthia (Bruce) Braun of Modesto; brother, Ron of Fair Oaks; sister, Muriel Hill of Oakdale; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his companion, Lavon Oliver.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20 at Oakdale Sportsmen’s Club.
