Selma ‘Sam’ Kinney, 79, died Thursday, Dec. 23 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Mountain Home, Arkansas. Her family moved to Alpaugh in 1942. After graduating high school, she moved to Merced and began working at Pacific Bell. She married Ed Kinney.

In 1983, Mrs. Kinney moved to Modesto for her job with Pacific Bell, and in 1987, she settled in Oakdale. She retired in 1994 to spend time with family and friends.

She was a member of Oakdale TOPS and attended Living Hope Christian Fellowship. She was at her best when doing for others. She loved her family and friends and leaves wonderful memories for them.

She faced her health issues with strength and dignity, and taught others about courage and grace until her last moments.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Bruce) Hutchings of Oakdale; son, Tony (Cecilia) Kinney of Merced; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jess and Meda Atkinson; two brothers; and two sisters.

A gathering for family and friends to share special memories will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 7 at 891 River Vista Court, Oakdale.
