Scott Mayfield
0828 Obit S Mayfield

Pastor Scott Mayfield, 61, died Sunday, Aug. 25 after a short battle with cancer at Community Hospice, Hughson.

He and his family moved to Oakdale in 1989 from Ontario, having been appointed pastor of the Sierra Foothills Community Church (Oakdale Free Methodist), serving that congregation until becoming the associate pastor of Living Hope Christian Fellowship in Oakdale. More recently, he served as chaplain with the Oakdale and Riverbank Memorial Chapels.

Previously, he served Free Methodist congregations in Pasadena, Newberg, Ore., and the United Church of Christ in Condon, Ore. Later he served as the Southwest Area Director of the Free Methodist Foundation and directed marketing for continuing education at George Fox University of Newberg, Ore.

Mr. Mayfield’s great passion was making friends, serving his community, and proclaiming Christ. For 35 years, he taught adult Sunday school classes, led home groups, pastored five congregations, and in recent years supplied pulpit for many area churches. He became a fixture at Cindy’s Restaurant where he met countless individuals and families to plan weddings, funerals, baptisms, or to provide a word of counsel and encouragement, or just to have a cup of coffee.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Patricia Mayfield; son, Ryan Mayfield of Thousand Oaks; daughter, Katie Mayfield of Newport Beach; parents, George Mayfield and Jean Voelkle of Escondido; brother, George Mayfield of Escondido; and sister, Kathleen Braun of Washington, D.C.

Services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Living Hope Christian Fellowship, on Highway 120 and River Road, Oakdale.
