Karl Michael Vargas passed away on March 14, 2018, after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer.
Karl was born September 21, 1951, and grew up in Pleasanton, California. He and his high school sweetheart, Laurinda Gillengerten, attended Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton and St. Mary’s College in Moraga. They married in 1971, and after completing their teaching credential programs, headed to Australia for their first teaching jobs. Upon returning to California, Karl taught in Riverbank and Oakdale for 30 years.
Karl had a tremendous love of nature and enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Long Barn. He enjoyed hiking, swimming, bike riding, and traveling, especially to Ireland. He was a dedicated musician with a deep love of Celtic music. Karl especially treasured time spent with his grandchildren.
Karl had a special place in his heart for St Francis of Assisi. He was professed as a Lay Franciscan in 2015.
Karl is survived by his wife, Laurinda; his daughters, Lara Collinsworth (Jason) and Katherine Vargas; his grandchildren, Kevin and Keira Travis; his parents, Robert and Marilyn Athenour; his brother, Tom Athenour (Jill) and sister, Anne Athenour Martin (Eric). He also has left behind many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Pleasanton on Monday, April 16, 2018, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society.
We love you and miss you, Karlos. We are comforted by the promise that we will meet again!
