Carl ‘Singie’ Merrill, 73, died Tuesday, April 5 at Oak Valley Hospital.

He was born in El Paso, TX. He graduated from San Lorenzo High School and attended Laney College, Oakland. He lived in Oakdale for the past five years, and previously lived in Murphys.

Mr. Merrill was a 50-year member of the Sheet Metals Workers Local 104 and worked as a sheet metal layout designer in the Bay Area. He created many award winning signs during his employment at Houser Neon in Houston, TX.

Formerly a member of the Ski Dolphin Club, he also enjoyed piloting and was an avid golfer. He belonged to the Men’s Club at both Tilden Golf Club in Berkeley and Forrest Meadows Golf Club in Murphys. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Parish in Sonora.

His trademark was his creative handiwork, passion for life, quick wit, and sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kathleen Merrill of Oakdale; children, Linda Ricketts, Michael Merrill, both of Anchorage, AK, Rita Reed of North Bend, WA; stepchildren, Lisa Blodgett, Melissa Olejniczak, both of Pleasanton, Bart Bonetti of Spring, TX, Sabrina Anderson of Livermore, Alana Gress of Dublin; brother, David Merrill of Dallas, TX; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
