Alice Belle Day Wohlfrom was born in Oakdale, CA 7-11-23, to Ruby and John Day. Alice was the youngest of the couple’s four daughters and the only one born in a hospital. Alice grew up in Riverbank , CA where her parents and grandparents were pioneers in building the early Riverbank community. As a youth she spent her summers swimming the in the local “plunge” and helping her parents in their store. She graduated from Oakdale Union High School in 1941, where she was an active member and officer of the student body. She then attended business college in Modesto, CA. After working for the school district she joined her sister Martha in Sacramento. During WWII, she worked at McClellan Air Force Base as a pool secretary eventually becoming secretary for the commanding officer. She carpooled to work with Velda Wohlfrom (Eisbrener) who would become her sister-in-law. Velda introduced Alice to her brother Harold Harley Wohlfrom while he was home on leave from serving in the Pacific on the USS San Francisco. They married Sep 17, 1944.
After His discharge from the Navy, Alice and Harley settled in Woodland, close to Harley’s parents, and began raising their family of four daughters. Alice took great pride in this and had an active life participating in her daughters’ extra-curricular activities, sewing much of their clothing and gowns and chauffeuring them to and from all their activities. Alice also provided various types of support to Harley while he worked as a carpenter, an adult night school teacher and an independent contractor. Alice also played bridge with various clubs with her friends.
As the girls grew older, Alice began transcribing courtroom dictation. This lead to her becoming a secretary for Herb Chandler at the Yolo County Ag Dept and then a legal secretary for the Yolo County District Attorney’s office. She retired from the Yolo County DA’s office in 1981 where she’d been active in the California Legal Secretaries Inc., serving as a chapter governor in 1973. After retirement, Alice remained active in the Retired Legal Secretary Association, spent hours tracing the family’s ancestry, enjoyed traveling with Harley, particularly to those events sponsored by The Survivors of Pearl Harbor Association and later as a surviving spouse, and sharing her wisdom with her two granddaughters Jessika Johnson and Jennifer Wohlfrom-Hall Alice was preceded in death by her husband Harley, her parents, and three sisters. She is survived by her four daughters: Judy, Kerry and Sara Wohlfrom and PamelaJohnson (Donald); granddaughters: Jessika Johnson, Jennifer Wohlfrom-Hall; and 6 nieces and a nephew. She also leaves behind many devoted friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, Oct 12 at the family home at 9 West Marshall Ave from 1-4pm.
