GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto show that average gasoline prices in Modesto have risen 2.3 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $5.44/gallon on Monday, Aug. 3.
Prices in Modesto are 19.2 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.27/gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has increased 7.1 cents compared to a week ago and stands at $5.32 per gallon.
According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $4.98/gallon while the most expensive was $7.09, a difference of $2.11/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.81 while the highest was $9.00, a difference of $5.19/gallon.
The national average price of gasoline has fallen 0.8 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.05/gallon on Aug. 3. The national average is up 28.5 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 93.6 cents per gallon higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.
Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back five years show the highest Modesto price was $5.31 per gallon on Aug. 3, 2022 and the highest U.S. average price was $4.12, also in 2022. Lowest average Modesto price of $4.17 per gallon was Aug. 3, 2025 and the lowest U.S. average was recorded on the same date, coming in at $3.11 per gallon.
Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $5.38/gallon, up 2.9 cents per gallon from last week’s $5.35; Oakland - $5.57, down 2.0 cents from $5.59; and San Jose - $5.59, down 4.6 cents from last week’s $5.63/gallon.
“Average gasoline prices were a mixed bag across the country last week as oil markets went on a wild ride, surging on geopolitical tensions before pulling back Sunday night after President Trump signaled a potential deal may be in the works,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “By later this week, the national average could reach its highest level ever recorded for this point in the calendar year, a sobering milestone even as prices remain well below the all-time record set in 2022.”
