The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2. Note: Shifts are in 24-hour time periods, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Aug. 18 through Monday, Aug. 24. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, AUG. 24
Battalion 2: Chief Tucker deployed to Washington and will be assigned to the Little Giant fire.
Battalion 5: BC5 toured the Tim Bell Bridge project. Fire apparatus is not able to make it through the construction zone at this time.
SUNDAY, AUG. 23
Battalion 2: Battalion 2 companies trained with aerial and ground ladders in Station 24’s FMA.
8:37 p.m. – Engine 23, Water Rescue 24, Water Rescue 28, and BC2 responded to Yosemite Boulevard and Lake Road for two people stranded on the river. Both people were safely removed from the river without injury.
Battalion 5: Crews trained in their territories on firefighting strategies and tactics.
3:28 p.m. – Engine, 27, Engine 28, Engine 29 and Battalion 5 responded to a head on collision on Milton Road just south of Highway 4 in the unincorporated area of Stanislaus County. Crews arrived to find two patients, both the drivers with moderate to minor injuries. One patient was transported to a local hospital and the other refused transport. A small dog was also involved in the crash and stayed cool inside a fire truck while waiting for his owner to be picked up by family at the scene.
SATURDAY, AUG. 22
Battalion 2: Battalion 2 crews completed Saturday drills in their respective FMA’s.
Online Target Solutions assignments were completed.
Maintenance on reserve apparatus was completed.
Battalion 5: Crews trained in their territories on firefighting strategies and tactics.
Battalion 5 crews conducted cleaning and maintenance at their stations and worked on assigned Target Solution assignments.
FRIDAY, AUG. 21
Battalion 5: 6:30 a.m. – Brush 28, Brush 1 and Battalion 5 assisted Escalon Fire Department with a vegetation fire off of River Road. Crews assisted with manpower and containment of the fire for roughly one hour before being released by the IC.
Engine 27, E28, E29, T1, T5, E11, Sq32 participated in a Technical Rescue Drill in Knights Ferry. The drill included a victim who had fallen down an embankment 40 feet down to the river bottom. Crews had to set up high angle and low angle systems to remove the patient. Firefighter/Paramedics simulated providing patient care until the victim could be removed to safety.
6:41 p.m. – Engine 27, Water Rescue 28 and Battalion 5 responded to Woodward Reservoir for a reported water rescue. Crews arrived to find all subjects out of the water and needing medical care. A total of four patients were evaluated on scene, with two patients being transported to a local hospital for further care.
THURSDAY, AUG. 20
Family, friends, and the MST fire family gathered to congratulate Chief John Bairos on his well-deserved promotion to Deputy Chief with the Modesto Fire Department. His dedication, leadership, and commitment to the department and the community have truly earned him this new role.
Battalion 2: 7:19 a.m. – Engine 24, Engine 33 and Battalion 2 responded to an injury accident. Upon E24’s arrival they reported two vehicles involved. Crews treated two patients for minor to moderate injuries.
Battalion 5: Engine 28 and Truck 5 reloaded new hose on reserve E30 in Valley Home.
The crew at Station 27 provided a station tour and a tour of the fire engine to a group of four-year-olds.
11:40 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28 and Battalion 5 responded to a reported injury accident with pin in. Engine 28 arrived on scene with one big rig on its side and checked for injuries. Fortunately, the driver was able to self-extricate and was unharmed in the incident. Engine 28 remained on scene to assist OPD with traffic control.
WEDNESDAY, AUG. 19
Battalion 2: 10:14 a.m. – OES 4617, 4618, and BC2 responded mutual aid with Escalon Fire Department for a vegetation fire along the railroad tracks on Santa Fe and River Road. The engines assisted with mop-up of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Battalion 5: Stations performed apparatus and station maintenance.
Engine 28 and Medic 1 made a visit to Heritage School of Discovery in Oakdale.
6:43 p.m. – Engine 27, Water Rescue 28, BC5 responded to Woodward Reservoir for the report of two people struggling in the water. When personnel arrived the sheriff’s office was on scene with two people that were swimming and had no needs. All units cancelled.
TUESDAY, AUG. 18
The Technical Rescue team (Truck 1, Truck 5, Rescue 11 and SQ32), along with Engine 27, Engine 28 and Engine 29 participated in a live rescue training in the Knights Ferry River Canyon. Crews utilized multiple rope systems, both high and low angle, to perform a rescue.
Battalion 2: 7:10 p.m. – Engines 23, 27, and BC2 responded to a vehicle accident in the 5600 block of Claribel Road. BC2 was the first to arrive and found two vehicles involved, blocking the westbound lane. There were no injuries; CHP is investigating the cause of the accident.
Battalion 5: Crews completed company level training, along with daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Engine 27, Engine 28 and Engine 29 participated in the technical rescue training that was held in the Knights Ferry river canyon.
