The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2. Note: Shifts are in 24-hour time periods, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, June 30 through Monday, July 6. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, JULY 6
Battalion 2: MST crews responded and assisted TCU on a vegetation fire in La Grange.
Battalion 5: Station 27 crews continued to mop up the large burn pile on River Road in Oakdale. The pile sits very close to river bottom vegetation and posed a threat with the high heat and winds.
SUNDAY, JULY 5
Battalion 5: 1:03 p.m. – Water Rescue 28, Water Rescue 24, Truck 5, Battalion 5, Oak Valley Ambulance and PHI Air ambulance responded to Frymire Road and Morrison Road for a possible water rescue on the Stanislaus River in Knights Ferry. Fire crews and Stanislaus Sheriff searched the area as an open 911 cell call was tracking on the river. Crews contacted the caller who was in no distress after an accidental 911 call. All resources cleared.
3:55 p.m. – Brush 28, OES4617, Water Tender 27, OES4618, Brush 23, Water Tender 23, Engine 7, Battalion 5 and Battalion 2 responded to reports of a vegetation fire near Cleveland Avenue and River Road in Oakdale. Crews arrived on scene with a large slash pile of trees, brush and grass on fire that extended into the riverbank and trees. Crews stopped the forward progress and worked on containment for hours.
SATURDAY, JULY 4
Battalion 2: 8:30 p.m. – Engine 26 and Battalion 5 responded to a vegetation fire on Patterson Road in Riverbank. Crews quickly contained the fire and remained on scene for roughly 10 minutes to mop up.
Battalion 5: 2 p.m. – Brush 28, Grass 4617, 4618, Water Tender 27, Battalion 5 along with Cal Fire TCU responded for a vegetation fire at Woodward Reservoir. Crews arrived on scene to find a small vegetation fire that was put out by campers. Brush 28 along with one state engine remained on scene to put a handline around the fire and mop up.
2:30 p.m. – Engine 29, Engine 26, WR26 and Battalion 5 responded to Knights Ferry for a water rescue. Engine 29 arrived on scene just east of the covered bridge and pulled one subject from the water. Engine 29 immediately started ALS measures to treat the patient. The patient was air lifted by PHI to a local hospital for further treatment.
5:30 p.m. – Engine 27 responded to a vehicle fire on Armstrong Way in Oakdale. Crews arrived on scene to a well involved vehicle in the roadway. Crews quickly extinguished the fire, limiting any spread to the surrounding area.
8:40 p.m. – Brush 28, Grass 4617, WT27 and Battalion 5 responded to the report of a vegetation fire on Valley View Drive. Brush 28 arrived on scene to a 40 x 40 vegetation fire burning on the hillside. Crews quickly contained the fire and spent roughly 30 minutes on mop up.
11:32 p.m. – Engine 7, Brush 28, Engine 9 and Battalion 5 responded to the report of a vegetation fire on Dunbar Road. Engine 7 arrived on scene to a vegetation fire threatening a business. Crews were able to quickly contain the fire and prevented any damage to the nearby structure. The fire consumed roughly one-and-a-half acres and crews remained on scene for roughly an hour for mop up.
11:45 p.m. – Crews responded to a report of a working structure fire on Kimball Street in Oakdale. Crews arrived on scene to find fire in a detached garage. Crews quickly contained the fire and limited damage to the structure. Crews remained on scene for roughly 45 minutes for overhaul.
FRIDAY, JULY 3
Battalion 5: 5:40 p.m. – Engine 27 responded to the report of a vehicle accident in the 500 block of North Yosemite Avenue in Oakdale. E27 arrived on scene of a two-vehicle accident and provided care for one patient on scene who suffered minor injuries.
3:25 a.m. (Saturday) – Engine 27, Engine 28 and Battalion 5 responded to a report of a vehicle fire on Blue Spruce Drive in Oakdale. Engine 27 arrived on scene to find one vehicle well involved in the driveway threatening the home. Crews were able to quickly contain the fire and prevent any extension into the residence. Crews remained on scene for roughly an hour for overhaul.
THURSDAY, JULY 2
Battalion 2: Captain Zurilgen arrived at the Pocket Fire near Flagstaff, AZ, as part of a Federal Complex Incident Management Team.
3:43 p.m. – Engine 26, Quint 22, and BC2 responded to a medical aid in Riverbank for a reported adult drowning. Upon arrival, the patient was out of the water but having difficulty breathing. The patient was transported by Oak Valley Ambulance to a local hospital for further evaluation.
Battalion 5: Battalion 5 personnel practiced several different emergency scenarios. These included low-angle rope rescue, hose stretches within a stairwell, and various ground school exercises.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 1
Battalion 5: At Station 27, new personnel learned how to use “Crew Sense” to staff the department.
12:56 p.m. – MST crews were dispatched to assist TCU with a vegetation fire, Willms Road, just south of Highway 108. The fire was held to five acres. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
7:57 p.m. – Engine 28 was dispatched to the 1700 block of F Street for a subject who was altered. E28 and Oak Valley arrived at scene and found the subject unresponsive. CPR was started and ROSC was regained. E28 rode in with Oak Valley to the hospital to assist with medical care.
TUESDAY, JUNE 30
Battalion 2: Battalion 2 companies trained at Station 17 on forcible entry and victim removal techniques.
Battalion 5: 9:10 a.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28, Engine 29, Engine 23, Engine 7, Engine 3, Truck 5, Quint 18, Medic 1, BC5, BC2, and FIU responded to a commercial working structure fire in the 200 block of 10th Street in the City of Oakdale. Engine 28 arrived on scene with fire on one side of a single-story duplex. Crews operated in the offensive mode and quickly extinguished the fire preventing any fire extension into the neighboring unit of the duplex. All occupants were out of the fire unit and Oakdale PD evacuated the neighboring unit. Two cats were saved from the fire and one additional cat was found deceased. FIU is investigating the incident.
10:18 a.m. – OES 4615, OES 4618, Brush 28, Grass 21/Water Tender 21, and BC2 responded to assist Cal Fire TCU with a vegetation fire at Highway 108 and Rushing Mountain Road. The fire was contained to 120 acres and crews spent several hours mopping up the burned area.
