Mountain lion sighting prompts police warning
opd

A mountain lion was seen near Maag Avenue and East D Street on the east end of Oakdale at about 1 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28.

A review of available video showed the animal moving and behaving normally, with no obvious signs of illness or injury. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has been notified of the sighting.

Oakdale Police issued some tips following the sighting of the animal in the middle of a residential area.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert, particularly in the evening and early morning. Mountain lions should never be approached, followed, cornered or fed. A mountain lion passing through an area does not necessarily indicate aggressive behavior.

Additionally, residents should take these precautions:

Keep pets indoors, especially at night, dawn and dusk. Keep dogs leashed and pets close when outside.

Supervise children outdoors.

Do not leave pet food or other potential food sources outside.

Do not approach a mountain lion to take a photograph.

If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run. Face the animal, make yourself appear larger, make noise and slowly back away while leaving it an escape route.

Mountain lions are sometimes seen near the Stanislaus River and other rural areas within Oakdale. For more information about living near wildlife, visit the Keep Me Wild resource at: https://www.californialandcan.org/local-resources/Keep-Me-Wild/28191
