Knights Ferry plays host to Pumpkin Roll on Sunday
Knights Ferry

On the calendar for Sunday, Nov. 1, it’s the 63rd annual edition of the Pumpkin Roll, being hosted in historic Knights Ferry.

The object of the game, according to contest chair Tracy Griesner, is to start at the corner of Main and Dent streets and roll your pumpkins toward the firehouse. The winner is the one who gets the closest to the chalked finish line. There are five age categories from preschool to seniors citizen, with male and female trophy winners in each one.

Each year a pickup truck load of pumpkins is donated by George Perry and Sons of Manteca for the competition; they are one of the area’s largest growers.

Sign-ups ups start at 10:45 a.m. Sunday in front of the Knights Ferry Community Club; a small donation is accepted for the registration fee. Those up to five years old start the ball – or pumpkin – rolling at noon on the tennis courts. The main event for six years old and over begins at 1 p.m., with the senior citizens group going first.

There will also be the popular Pancake Breakfast at the IOOF Hall on Main Street, serving from 8 a.m. until noon, at a cost of $10.

A craft fair will be open in the Community Club House and on the tennis courts with multiple vendors; the Knights Ferry Garden Club will have their pumpkin roll desserts on sale, and the Knights Ferry Museum will be open, upstairs in Miller’s Hall. The ice cream shop and art studio in town will be open as well.

Along with the pumpkin roll, the day will offer a great opportunity to see if the salmon have made it up the Stanislaus River as far as Knights Ferry.
