Knights Ferry News
Knights Ferry

At the Oakdale Rural Fire Protection Board meeting held in town, the board voted to man the Knights Ferry station full time for the duration of the 2017 fire season. The Fire Chief-recommended decision is positive for our town but it wasn’t an easy decision for the board. For quite some time, the Knights Ferry and Valley Home’s fire departments have been manned only part time. The change will temporarily close the Valley Home station in order to keep the Knights Ferry station open full time. Dolly Haskell said, “It is important for Valley Home and Knights Ferry communities to work together to find a solution that will allow both Knights Ferry and Valley Home fire stations both to operate full time.” For now, as a resident of Knights Ferry, I am happy to have the fire department’s constant presence in town!

Dakota Voortman had a 13th birthday party for the books! Four groups of kids were sent on a scavenger hunt/Amazing Race around town. One of the highlights was eating ice cream sundaes with a chocolate covered cricket atop. Each person in the winning group got to smoosh whipped cream pie into party planners, Heather Voortman or Kaeli Sweet’s face! The party finished with an outdoor movie showing of Back to the Future. Happy birthday, Dakota!

The first week of school is complete at Knights Ferry School! There are three new teachers and a lot of new students. Welcome to our school, Mrs. Sondra Cusano, first grade; Mrs. Heather Stevenot, 3rd/4th grade; and Ms. Jenna Zellmer, 5th/6th grade! It warms my heart to see Mrs. Diane Boyer volunteer her time to help for a few days in the Kindergarten class as she was my Kindergarten teacher when I attended Knights Ferry. Back to School night is today, August 23 and all parents are invited to attend!

The Knights Ferry History and Museum Associates are looking for volunteer docents willing to donate a few hours a month to help in the museum on Sundays. This is an awesome opportunity to learn more about our town and community history. Both children and adults may volunteer and have their service hours recognized. Please contact Dolly Haskell in the Post Office if you are interested.

The Washington D.C. trip fundraiser raffle for a new iPad Air is over. The drawing was featured in a Facebook Live on Knights Ferry Bobcat Pride Facebook page. I couldn’t have been more embarrassed as I stood next to Sarah Sundberg while she pulled the winning ticket with my name from the jar. Thank you to all those who supported our group of kids fundraising their way to Washington D.C.!
