The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department issued a report shortly before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday that the body of Matilda Ortiz, 5, had been recovered.

The department released the following statement:

“Sheriff’s Officials have confirmed that the body of 5-year-old Matilda Ortiz has been recovered from the Stanislaus River where it was located by volunteers searching the area at around 4:45 this afternoon. Matilda’s family has verified that the body recovered was the missing 5-year-old who fell into the river on Sunday at 5:00 PM.”

The youngster had been at the river with family members on Sunday when she slipped on rocks and fell into the water. With the flow at an estimated 4200 cfs and temperatures under 50 degrees, crews searched for several hours on Sunday and returned to the effort Monday, Tuesday and again Wednesday with boats, helicopters, searches of the river bank and utilizing drones.
