Two men suffered serious injuries that sent them both to the hospital following a shooting that may have been gang-related, said police.
Citizens reported shots fired in the 900 block of West G Street Sunday, June 7 at approximately 11:10 p.m. As they arrived in the area, dispatch reported that two victims of gunshot wounds were dropped off at the hospital. As police pulled into the hospital area, they noted a small, white vehicle with the back window shot out, leaving the area. A traffic stop was made on the vehicle at the 7-11 store parking lot on West F Street and the driver, Jose Diaz, 20, of Oakdale indicated that his two friends, Michael Coggin, 25, of Riverbank and Mark Dominguez, 38, of Oakdale were victims of a shooting. Diaz, a member of the Sureño street gang, was previously arrested for a separate incident that occurred on Thursday, May 20. Diaz was rearrested on a warrant Thursday morning when a patrol officer saw him riding a bicycle down Third and J Street and took him into custody on charges of possession of a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, felony vandalism, and possession of a controlled substance.
Diaz told police that he and his friends were traveling westbound in the 900 block of West G Street on Sunday when they saw two people they thought they knew. They slowed down to talk to the subjects and one of the two started shooting at them. Coggin suffered a gunshot wound to the neck while Dominguez was grazed in the head with a bullet. Coggin was sent to Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto for treatment and Dominguez was treated and released from Oak Valley Hospital.
The suspects are still at large and this remains an active investigation. Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to call Det. Manriquez at the Oakdale Police Department at 847-2231.
