The month of October marks Breast Cancer Awareness month. The annual event supported by major breast cancer charities is equally recognized on a local level as businesses and school sites host pink events in support of the campaign.

Century 21, M&M Associates is one such business, dedicating the first Friday of each October to Breast Cancer Awareness events and activities at each of its 32 offices throughout California.

“It’s the company’s intention to make Breast Cancer Awareness a signature program for us,” Corecia Davis, C21 Vice President, Human Resources stated.

In so doing the Oakdale office will host varying events including lunch and a walk-a-thon, encouraging staff to raise funds of $100 to receive a signature event T-shirt. Proceeds from the walk-a-thon will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

Event sponsors for the Oakdale event are: Scenic Oaks Funding and Old Republic Home Warranty. The Friday, Oct. 5 event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the walk starting shortly after. The walk will begin at the 1414 E. F St., Oakdale office.

“Through those sponsors we’ll be able to do bigger and better things,” Davis, also a breast cancer survivor said.

Statistics show that one in eight women or 12 percent of U.S. women are at risk of a breast cancer diagnosis. A statistic known all too well by Davis, who discovered a gene mutation in 2016 and underwent surgery that fall. Her mother is a 15-year breast cancer survivor.

“The end result was with that mutation, it has increased my risk of having it for life,” she explained. “For one, I’m grateful because it’s information so that I can do certain things in my life to prevent a future occurrence.”

Davis shared as both a survivor, as well as an employee, there’s a sense of pride in the ownership of the event taken by C21 owners John M. Mello and Larry A. Matos, noting their follow-up with her earlier this year on planned events for the coming October.

“Breast cancer is so very personal to so many people,” she said. “I think so many of us have a personal connection to it. For us (C21) it makes sense. We are such a big company, we feel we can make an impact.”
