Two different musical concerts are scheduled for early December at Modesto Junior College.

The Modesto Junior College Community Orchestra will present a fall concert on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. in The PMAC Auditorium on the MJC East Campus, 435 College Ave., Modesto.

The concert opens with the well-known hymn, For the Beauty of the Earth. Other works on the program are Mars, Venus and Jupiter from The Planets by Gustav Holst and Blue Skies arranged by Dan Maas. Members of the MJC Chamber Choir, directed by Professor Cathryn Tortell, will join the orchestra for a grand finale, the film music from Star Trek. The Enochs High School Orchestra, directed by Phil Vallejo, will also be featured on the program.

The MJC Community Orchestra membership includes college students, high school students, teachers, local professional musicians, moms, dads, grandparents, business owners, a principal software engineer, an ophthalmologist, a lawyer, a farm manager, an engineer, an anesthesiologist, and an optometrist.

Anne Martin, a graduate of the Yale School of Music has directed the Orchestra since 2001. Tickets will be available at the door 90 minutes before the concert: cost is $5 general, $2 students, YCCD/MJC staff and seniors. There will be no cost for parking.

Wednesday, Dec. 4 the MJC Music Department will present an electronic music concert at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall on the East Campus, 435 College Ave., Modesto.

The concert will feature original electronic music compositions created by student composers from the Modesto Junior College Electronic Music 2 class. The composers featured will be Saul Delgado, Carlos Haro, Richard Hopkins, Connor McClintock, Michael Reeves and Daniel Ruiz.

The music will be created using synthesizers, computer-controlled synthesizers, samplers and digital effects. Some of the compositions will be performed live while others will be pre-recorded performances. Special lighting effects, video displays and slides will accompany the compositions. The MJC Electronic Music Studio Director, David Dow, will also perform an original electronic music composition.

There is no cost for admission; all in the community are welcome to attend the concert.
