While post people think of family feasts as the holidays approach, there are plenty of people among us that have to worry every night about where their next meal is going to come from.

Fortunately there are places where people are actively working to ensure that food shortages aren’t standard operating procedure not only during the holidays, but also throughout the rest of the year – bringing attention to the issue of food insecurity even when it isn’t at the forefront of the public consciousness.

Here are places that serve the Manteca community with food pantry outreach efforts to help alleviate the ongoing problems:
*Emergency Food Bank – While this is technically a Stockton-based food pantry program, their reach extends throughout San Joaquin County and their efforts needy Manteca families almost daily. And part of the way that they do that is by making their offerings mobile to those who need them the most – people who might have transportation to come pick up the food that they need, especially if they don’t live near the Stockton office.

One of the unique ways the Emergency Food Bank sets itself apart is through its Mobile Farmer’s Market program which brings fresh fruits and vegetables directly to seniors and low-income families that need the help – placing an emphasis on nutrition rather than just substance so that those who are benefitting from the generosity of donors and supporters are getting something healthy and beneficial. Those who qualify are also given information about food stamps and the CalFresh program – the state name for the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, or SNAP – to help the bridge the gap between meals with healthy, nutritional options. 7 Scotts Ave., Stockton CA. 209.464.7639.

*Calvary Community Church – On top of being one of the largest church congregations in the community, Calvary has a long history of providing to those who need assistance. According to several food pantry websites the Lathrop Road church site provides much needed nutritional assistance to low-income families who can’t afford to put food on the table. On Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the church provides a bag of groceries to those who need them and are able to produce valid identification. The service is free of charge. 815 W. Lathrop Road. 209.239.1345.
