Varsity Boys Take First At Cross Country Subsections

Oakdale’s varsity cross country boys captured first place team honors at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Subsection Meet.

The meet was hosted Saturday, Nov. 6 at Frogtown, the Calaveras County Fairgrounds with good air quality and running conditions along the three-mile varsity course.

Top finishers for Oakdale were junior Caleb Cavanaugh, who took first place overall in 16:16; and junior Dax Daley, fourth overall in 16:23. Rounding out Oakdale’s top five – with all five scoring team members capturing first place medals – were junior Nathan Luca, 15th, 17:23; sophomore Mason Oliveira, 17th, 17:35; sophomore Jackson Oliveira, 18th, 17:35.

Also taking on the three-mile course and running well for the Mustangs were sophomores Abner Gonzalez, 18:17 and Carlos Martinez, 18:27; juniors Alex Martinez, 18:27 and Khriztian Escalante, 19:19.

The varsity girls placed second as a team at the subsections, paced by the second place overall finish from senior Haleigh Humble, completing the three-mile course in 18:53. Humble, along with junior Kassidy Fmura, finishing 11th overall in 20:09, and senior Hannah Beth Norman, taking 24th overall in a time of 21:18, were medal winners for the Lady Mustangs.

Also running for Oakdale were freshman Ava Calandro, 22:29; juniors Karina Verduzco, 22:31 and Angelica Elizondo, 23:03; freshman Audry Scott, 23:23; senior Victoria Becerra, 25:19; and junior Kasandra Carlos, 26:00.

“Both teams performed extremely well. We are pleased how they competed,” said head coach Guy Fowler. “We have to get ready for Section finals on Saturday with a good week of practice.”

The varsity boys and girls will travel to Folsom High School on Saturday, Nov. 13 for the Section finals.
