Six Mustang Matmen Compete In Nationals

Members of the Oakdale High School wrestling team made a tip to Virginia Beach for the 2019 National High School Coaches Association High School Nationals. The three-day event saw Michael Torres, Brayden Abell, Henry Porter, Seth Borba, Clayton Bashor and Ceasar Garza all make the cross-country trip.

Abell placed third overall in the tournament at 106 pounds. In the round of 16, Abell defeated Kelly Dunnigan of New Jersey 2-0. In the quarterfinals he defeated Quade Smith of Utah 1-0. He fell to Richard Treanor of North Carolina in the semifinals 6-4, but bounced back with a 7-0 victory in the consolations to place third.

Garza, at 132, a freshman, took fourth overall in the tournament. He started the tournament off with a fall victory over Sean Ohoro of Ohio. Garza followed up with a 7-4 victory over Kodiak Cannedy of Tennessee. His tournament run for a championship fell short when he lost to Michael Kilic of Georgia 9-1. Garza battled in the consolation round to place fourth.

Sophomore Porter, 132, placed third. In the round of 16 Porter defeated Anson Dewar of New Hampshire. He followed up with a 3-1 victory over fellow Californian Victor Jacinto. Porter then lost to Caden McCrary of Georgia.
