Oakdale Wrestlers Shine At NUWAY Summer Nationals

Nine Oakdale High School grapplers competed in a high profile tournament in Atlantic City, New Jersey this past week. The wrestlers and coaching staff traveled across the country as members of SCWAY, the State of California Wrestling Association for Youth, and placed first overall in the NUWAY Summer Nationals. Brayden Abell, Cody Golding and Brody Johnson all won championships, while Michael Torres and Jonathan Hernandez placed second. Seth Borba placed fourth in the tournament.

In the team’s first challenge, SCWAY battled Iron Horse Grey in the second round of Pool C. SCWAY edged out Iron Horse Grey 22-18. Michael Torres (108) defeated Shane Nelson via decision 5-0. Brayden Abell (117) won via fall over Thomas Conselyea. Seth Borba (155) defeated Scott Jarosz 2-1. Cody Golding suffered a 13-7 loss to Bryson Mafaro.

In the third round SCWAY defeated Howard Country Headhunters Gray 45-12. Torres defeated Jeremy Fox via fall. Abell defeated Rayyan Nadeem via fall. Clayton Bashor (130) defeated Aamil Vahora via fall. Jordan Van Rys (167) defeated Aown Dar 8-5. Golding defeated Sam Mitchell via fall.

The fourth round saw SCWAY fall to Ultimate Wrestling Academy 31-27. Torres won via forfeit. Abell defeated Anthony Molinaro via fall. Bashor won via a 5-0 decision over Antonio Abate. Borba defeated Drew Petaccia via fall. Van Rys fell to Matt Beyer via fall. Golding dropped his match to Antony Sciuto 4-2.

In round five SCWAY fell to Shore Thing 34-18. Torres fell to Anthony Santaniello 8-1. Abell won via technical fall 16-0 over Michael Cate. Bashor won 2-1 over Michael Richardson. Borba defeated Ty Bailey 4-1. Van Rys earned a 3-1 victory over Gavin Stewart.

The quarterfinals saw SCWAY defeat Southern Regional 33-27. Torres defeated Conner Collins 3-0. Abell defeated Chris Lubeski via fall. Bashor earned a fall victory over Jayson Scerbo. Borba picked up a 5-0 decision over Cole Velardi. Van Rys fell to Nico Vargas via fall. Golding won via forfeit.

In the second set of semifinals SCWAY defeated Hudson Valley 42-30. Torres and Abell won via fall. Bashor defeated Drew Greco via fall. Van Rys fell via fall. Golding defeated Steve Felice via fall.

In the first place match SCWAY defeated Iron Horse Grey for the second time.

“The boys finished up a good summer of hard work with an excellent performance,” said Oakdale High School head coach Steve Strange.
