Oakdale Varsity Squads Sink Against Lodi

Thursday evening Oakdale High School hosted Lodi in a pair of water polo matches. The Oakdale girls team fell 8-6 and the boys followed with a 14-7 loss.

The Lady Mustangs fell behind 3-0 in the first quarter until utility player Bethany Metcalfe scored the team’s first goal with 10 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. Down 4-1 in the second quarter junior Hannah Lee found teammate Haley Rivera for Oakdale’s second goal to cut the lead in half. Oakdale was shut out in the third quarter as Lodi scored four goals to extend their advantage to 8-2 entering the final frame.

The Lady Mustangs answered with four goals in the fourth as Metcalfe scored three goals in a two-minute span. The team’s final goal came from Kayla Peterson with 2:07 remaining in the game but they couldn’t get any closer.

Following the girls game, the Oakdale varsity boys took the pool but fell behind 3-0 in the first quarter. Senior Aron Cameron scored Oakdale’s first goal in the second quarter with 5:01 left in the half. At the 2:30 mark in the second quarter Cameron scored the team’s second goal to trim the deficit to 5-2.

Later, down 6-2, David Terwilliger made it 6-3 with a goal with 1:48 left in the first half.

Things got away from Oakdale in the third quarter when Lodi scored six goals. Chandler Neal found Stash Perry for a goal with 4:23 left in the third and Cameron and Neal each scored in the third to have the score 12-6 after three quarters of play.

In the fourth quarter goalkeeper Zach Hill only gave up two goals to the visitors and had four saves. The Mustangs lone goal of the fourth quarter came from Ethan Perry on an assist from Cameron.

This week both teams are off and are scheduled to return to the pool on Wednesday, Oct. 3 when they host Kimball.
