Oakdale Varsity Baseball Wins Trio Of Games

It was a busy week for the Oakdale High School varsity baseball team, but a successful one to say the least. Oakdale swept Escalon in a two-game series during the week and on Saturday afternoon the boys defeated Hughson in a non-league game.

Game one of the series against Escalon took place on May 4 at Oakdale where the Mustangs edged the Cougars 8-7. Oakdale once led 5-0 in the contest until the sixth inning where Escalon scored three runs in the top of the sixth. With a 6-3 lead heading into the seventh inning, Escalon tagged Oakdale for four runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-6 advantage. In the bottom of the seventh Dom Antinetti led off the inning with a line drive home run over the left field fence to tie up the game. The contest would go to extra innings where Oakdale walked-off the Cougars when senior Carson Cripe hit a line drive over the head of the first baseman falling into fair territory and scoring John Wylie for the win. Oakdale had 13 hits in the game including three by Preston Vieira.

Thursday, May 6 the boys traveled to Escalon where Oakdale won 11-2. Oakdale scored runs in five of the seven innings including three runs in both the sixth and seventh inning. Wylie led the team with three hits, while Cripe and Trevor Diaz each had two RBI. Wylie helped his team out on the mound as well as he pitched six strong innings giving up just five hits, two runs and struck out eight. Andrew Sapwell pitched the final inning giving up one hit and striking out three.

Saturday’s non-conference game saw Oakdale jump out to a 4-0 advantage in the first inning before the Huskies tied things up in the top of the fourth inning. With the score tied at four, Oakdale answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to regain the lead 6-4. Oakdale had a total of just four hits in the game, including a double by Joey Janssen. Sapwell was awarded the win as he pitched two innings, giving up no runs and striking out two batters.

This week the Mustangs have a two-game series against Kimball. Oakdale is 10-4 on the year and Kimball is 7-7. Game one of the series was scheduled on Tuesday, May 11 at Kimball and Thursday afternoon Oakdale hosts the Jaguars with a start time currently scheduled for 4 p.m.
