Mustangs top 20 wins but drop regular season finale

With a 21-7 overall record and a first place 11-4 mark in Valley Oak League play, the postseason for baseball has arrived.

For the Oakdale High School varsity baseball team, their opening contest took place on Tuesday, May 7 against Beyer High School. Oakdale went in as the number two seed in the 2024 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division 3 playoffs, and got to host the number 15 seed Beyer squad. It was a 9-3 win against the Patriots for Oakdale in the Tuesday contest. Next, they host seven seed Vista del Lago, which defeated number 10 seed Los Banos, 6-0, in the opening round. The quarterfinal round game between the Mustangs and Eagles will be played in Oakdale on Thursday, May 9 at 4 p.m.

Other teams in the tournament are top seed Oakmont, Florin, Vanden, Pioneer, East Union, Christian Brothers, Lincoln, Rio Linda, Central Catholic, Weston Ranch, Manteca and Del Campo.

Oakdale finished the regular season on Wednesday, May 1 when they welcomed El Capitan. The Mustangs lost the season finale 11-6. The Gauchos had seven extra base hits in the road win. Oakdale tied the game at four in the bottom of the third inning but things slipped away from the Mustangs when El Capitan exploded for seven runs in the top of fourth. For Oakdale, Talan Abel had a pair of hits and two runs batted in. Maddox Dias, Griffin Costa, Christian Diebner, and Glen Weber each had one hit.

On the mound for Oakdale were Ayden Ardis, Trey Parsons and Colby Crofts. Ardis pitched three and two-thirds innings giving up no hits, one unearned run, and he struck out a trio of batters. Parsons pitched a pair of innings giving up seven runs, four earned, one walk and struck out two. Crofts pitched one and a third innings, giving up four hits and surrendered six earned runs.

It was Senior Night for the Mustangs. Seniors Carlo Antinetti, Talan Abel, Tommy Chance, Julian Soriano, Maddox Dias, Christian Diebner, Reid Grandstaff, Trey Parsons, Glen Weber, Colby Crofts and Jacob Dessert were all honored prior to the game.
