Around the Oakdale High School campus, the spring sports teams are in full swing, with everything from golf to swimming, baseball to softball and boys volleyball getting in some meets, matches and games this week.

Here is a round up of the recent action for the squads.

VOLLEYBALL

Friday night, March 8 the Oakdale High School boys volleyball team took the home court. The Mustangs hosted Downey High School and the visiting Knights defeated the Mustangs in three straight sets.

In the first set Oakdale trailed 12-1 but the Mustangs would close the gap to 17-11. However, the Knights would end the set on an 8-0 run to win 25-11. More of the same in the second set as Downey would once again win 25-11. Down 3-0 early in the set, Oakdale took a 4-3 advantage following a point by Jacob Kindrick. However, Downey went on a 10-3 run resulting in a timeout for the home team. The Mustangs ultimately lost the set.

The third set saw a determined Mustang team. Down 11-2, the Mustangs stopped the 8-0 Downey run when Julio Galvan hit the ball over the net and between two defenders. Later, Kindrick spiked the ball to make it 16-7. The Mustangs would bring it to 19-14 forcing a timeout for Downey. The Knights would regain the momentum and end the set on a 6-3 run to close out the Mustangs 25-17.

“These boys are competitive and determined,” said Mustangs coach Kelly Nasrawi speaking on the third and final set. “That’s one of the things we discuss, is that we learn from previous plays and that we try and correct them as the match goes on. They did a great job in the third. They knew that they were down early but battled and competed the whole time. I am proud of their effort, again this is a new program and they learn and improve every day.”

This week Oakdale hosts Livingston on Wednesday, March 13 at 6 p.m.

Thursday night the boys travel to take on Big Valley Christian High School at 6 p.m.
