A split of contests this past week left the Oakdale varsity soccer boys (9-9-4, 6-4-2) in fourth place in the crowded Valley Oak League standings.

On Monday, Feb. 5 the team hosted first place Sierra (13-4-3, 9-1-2). In the match Sierra went up 1-0 at the break and doubled up the Mustangs 2-1 in the second to win by a final of 3-1. Weston Wright scored Oakdale’s lone goal of the game when Alex Zamora found him for the assist. Sierra freshman Osayi Osawaro scored two goals to lead the Timberwolves to the road win.

Following the loss Oakdale regrouped and headed to Lathrop (5-11-4, 2-7-3) on Wednesday, Feb. 7. The Mustangs found the net three times in the second half to pull away from the Spartans to get a 4-1 road win. Goals by Alex Zamora, Izzy Valero and Dayne Sturtevant paced Oakdale. Eric Anaya served up a pair of assists in the win.

Monday, Feb. 12 the team was scheduled to honor its seniors on Senior Night. Oakdale took on Weston Ranch (7-11-3, 7-4-1) following The Leader’s press time. Earlier in the season the two teams tied 1-1 at Weston Ranch.

“We are still battling for a playoff spot and this team has no quit. That’s one of the things that I will miss about playing Oakdale soccer,” said senior Izzy Valero.

Oakdale’s regular season comes to a close on the road at Central Catholic (4-7-4, 3-5-2). That game is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14.
