Mustang Boys Capture Pitman Tournament Title

The Oakdale Mustang varsity soccer boys are off to a 5-1-0 overall record to start the new season. Three of those wins came at the annual Pitman Tournament in Turlock over the weekend. Prior to the tournament start on Friday, Dec. 2 the boys took on Pitman in a non-league contest that saw Oakdale knock off Pitman 2-1 at Oakdale. Two Mustang seniors helped power Oakdale to that win as Alejandro Gonzalez dished out two assists to Wesley Allen for both of the goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Dubiel made four saves in the win.

At the tournament, Oakdale went 3-0 and in their first game they blanked Lincoln 2-0. Allen once again found the net twice, once by an assist from senior Jake Mendoza. Dubiel had three saves in the win. In the second game on Friday the team had another shutout, this time over Ceres 2-0. Junior Israel Valero and sophomore Dayne Sturtevant each had a goal with assist by seniors Manuel Aguilar and Winslow Barrales. Also for the second straight game, Dubiel had three saves for Oakdale.

In the final contest on Saturday, Dec. 3 the Mustangs held off a late rally by Golden Valley to win 5-4. Oakdale had a 3-1 first half lead but were outscored 3-2 in the second half. Barrales scored two goals and dished out an assist to score a total of five points for Oakdale in the win. Allen and Mendoza each had a goal and an assist for Oakdale. Junior Weston Wright scored a goal and Valero added an assist. Dubiel gave up four goals but he was heavily attacked and had five saves in the win.

The Mustangs will be in action tonight, Wednesday, Dec. 7 when they host Central Valley. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The junior varsity boys tied with Pitman on Wednesday, Nov. 30 in a 3-3 contest. Juan Mata scored two goals for Oakdale assisted by Miguel Casillas and Eric Anaya. Thomas Knierieme added an unassisted goal for Oakdale. The boys went to the Pitman Tournament this past weekend and like the varsity they took first place.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

The Lady Mustangs soccer team is off to a rocky start this winter. The girls fell to 0-2-0 as of The Leader’s press time. Oakdale fell to Central Valley on Tuesday night 5-2. Goals by juniors Viviana Albor and Kylee Black were assisted by sophomore Brianna Montoya and freshman Sara Velazquez. On Thursday, Dec. 1 the girls traveled to Turlock and were bitten by the Bulldogs 6-0. The girls hosted Venture Academy of Stockton on Monday night Dec. 5 and traveled to Stockton on Tuesday, Dec. 6 to take on Franklin; both games were held following The Leader press time. Oakdale will be participating in the Pitman Tournament this weekend and begin Valley Oak League action on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Manteca. Oakdale’s junior varsity girls’ team fell 5-0 to Central Valley on Tuesday night, Nov. 29 and traveled to Stockton on Tuesday to take on Franklin following The Leader press time. Oakdale opens league play on the road against Manteca on Tuesday night Dec. 13. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
