Lady Mustang Squads First At NorCal Softball Classic

It was a four-game tournament for the Oakdale High School varsity softball squad over the weekend. The annual NorCal Classic was held in Tracy where Oakdale took first place in the Platinum Bracket. The Lady Mustangs (21-0-1, 10-0-0) defeated Franklin, Patterson, Ripon and Tracy to post a 4-0 record during the tournament.

On Thursday, April 25 the girls edged out Franklin 6-4. In the win Brittany Bye and Lexi Webb each had two hits. Bye had a double and Webb hit a pair of doubles and brought in four runs. Rylie Goodridge, Dylan Gonzalez and Rilyn Cassaretto each had one hit. Mariyn Waterman and Cortney Koelmans each pitched for Oakdale, as Waterman pitched two-and-two-thirds innings, getting the start and allowing nine hits, two strikeouts and four earned runs. Koelmans earned the win pitching two-and-a-third innings surrendering two hits and striking out four.

Later that day Oakdale took on Patterson and shut them out 6-0. Koelmans had a pair of hits in the game and Goodridge also had two hits to lead Oakdale. Gonzalez had a two RBI day and Koelmans, Cassaretto, Bye and Goodridge each drove in one. Oakdale was consistent in the first three innings, as they scored two runs in each of the first three. Webb pitched a complete game shutout. She gave up two hits and struck out 10 in the win.

On Saturday, April 27 the girls wrapped up the tournament with a pair of shutout wins. In the morning the girls blanked Ripon 4-0. Koelmans continued to have a big weekend as she went 2-for-3 against the Lady Indians with an RBI. Emily Smith also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Cassaretto hit an RBI double as well. Webb pitched another complete game for Oakdale. She had 16 strikeouts and gave up two hits.

In the finals Oakdale defeated Tracy 2-0. Breaking up a scoreless game, Koelmans drove in a run in the fourth and added an insurance RBI in the sixth to help defeat Tracy. Koelmans went 2-for-3 against the Bulldogs. Webb pitched her third straight complete game and gave up five hits and struck out five.

The girls returned to Valley Oak League action on Tuesday night, April 30 when they took on Central Catholic (1-14, 1-8). The contest was held following The Leader’s press time. Thursday, May 2 Oakdale wraps up the regular season against East Union (13-8, 8-1) on the road. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

 

JUNIOR VARSITY

It was a first place finish for the JV girls in the NorCal Classic at Northgate Park in Manteca. Oakdale went 3-0-1 on the way to placing first in the C Division. Three shutout victories, over Concord, Gregori and Ceres, helped pave the way for first place. The girls defeated Concord 16-0, Gregori 14-0 and Ceres 11-0. Oakdale finished the tournament with a 0-0 draw against Sheldon. Neither team reached second base in the pitching battle. In the game Amanda Bricker pitched seven innings giving up just two hits and striking out 10. Against Sheldon, Kylie Valente had the team’s only two hits. She also went a total of 8-for-13 in the tournament.

At the plate, Kiki Costa also had a solid tournament, as she went 5-for-7 with three RBI.

Oakdale will play East Union on the road on Thursday, May 2 to complete their regular season.
