Volleyball battles

It has been a tough season on the court for Oakdale’s varsity volleyball boys. They were shut out in a pair of Valley Oak League matches in recent action. They fell by a 12-25, 17-25, 14-25 decision to visiting Sierra on March 25 and then were on the road to face off with Kimball on March 27. The Jaguars handled the Mustangs in 13-25, 14-25, 18-25 fashion. The squad continues to work hard but has had trouble getting wins on the books.

Tennis edges Sierra

In their lone contest of the week, Oakdale took on Sierra in a classic tennis battle. Both teams entered the day undefeated and tied for first place in the Valley Oak League. At the end of the day on Tuesday, March 26 Oakdale defeated Sierra 5-4 to stay on top of the standings. Jaden Lebsack defeated Ashton Hilliard 6-0, 6-0. Neil Ongkingco defeated Hashain Ali 6-2, 4-2, who retired due to injury. Jaxton Marler defeated Oliver Naven 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). In a hard-fought battle, Oakdale’s Camden Knight fell to Santiago Franco 4-6, 6-4, 5-7. Sierra’s Brady Alves topped Parker Whitemyer 6-1, 6-1. Dylan Krause lost to David Martin 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles action Levi Hensley and Matt Yakligian knocked off Sparsh Beedi and Sid Gopendran 1-6, 6-4, 7-5. Sierra evened things up as Ryan Alves and Harshith Kumar defeated Austin Speiller and Tristan McCarthy 5-7, 6-7, (5-7). The final doubles match of the evening saw Christian Wright and Max Birchall of Oakdale defeat Alex Rey Rosario and Zain Ali 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) 10-7.

“It took everybody’s effort to get there. The match was clinched by our number one doubles, Levi Hensley and Matt Yakligian,” said Mustangs coach Grant Miller. “It is a really special occasion for those two. Of course it took everybody to win, but sometimes players get to clinch a match for the team, in a big circumstance like this. Timing is part of it, and it is really awesome to come through for your teammates like that.”

Oakdale returns to action on Tuesday, April 9 at 3:30 p.m.
