Girls Hoops Stumble In VOL Opener

The Oakdale High School girls basketball team hit the court twice this past week. Both games were played on the road, at Tokay and at Manteca. It turned out to be a tale of two completely different games for the Lady Mustangs (12-5, 0-1).

On Wednesday, Jan. 2 Oakdale took on Tokay (5-10, 0-0) in their final non-conference game of the season. A 21-point second quarter helped the Lady Mustangs pull away from Tokay in the 73-44 road win. Senior Grace Higle posted a remarkable 36 points in the victory. Higle went 13-for-24 from the field and made 6-of-8 from the free throw line. She also pulled down nine rebounds and had three steals.

Alicia Platt added 15 points and six rebounds, and Afton Daley added 11 points for Oakdale.

On Friday night, Jan. 4 Oakdale opened up Valley Oak League play against Manteca (11-6, 2-0). The first place Buffaloes held Oakdale in check as they defeated the Lady Mustangs, 65-33. Only four players scored for Oakdale in the game. Higle followed up her monster of a game with a team high 13 points and four assists. Kayden Legan also scored in double digits as the sophomore had 11 points and two steals. Platt scored seven points and Daley had two points in the road loss.

On Monday, Jan. 7 the girls traveled to Manteca to take on East Union (11-5, 2-0) following The Leader’s press time. Next, Oakdale will host Sierra (10-5, 0-1) on Wednesday, Jan. 9 with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

On Friday night, the girls will also host Central Catholic (13-5, 0-2) with a 7 p.m. tipoff.

 

JUNIOR VARSITY

Oakdale’s junior varsity team won both of their games this past week. Oakdale had a pair of dramatic wins as they defeated Tokay 45-40 and edged Manteca 46-45. In their road win against Tokay, Aidyn Hill scored 23 points and had nine rebounds. Madison Jones fell three points shy of a double-double, notching seven points and 10 rebounds. In the team’s VOL opener against Manteca, Abby Cogburn scored 12 points and added nine rebounds. Jones had nine points and nine rebounds in the win. Hill also had seven points and seven rebounds in the game. Oakdale will host Sierra on Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m. and will take on Central Catholic on Friday night, Jan. 11 with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff time.

 

FRESHMEN

The youngest of the Lady Mustang hoopsters blew out Tokay 49-15 behind Ruby Fink’s 17 point effort. Tori Cadwell, Savannah Borba and Maiyah Chrisman each had six points. Oakdale dropped their league opener 46-45 to Manteca on the road. Alivia Antinetti and Cadwell each had 10 points in the loss. Oakdale will host Sierra on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 4 p.m. and will host Turlock Christian on Friday, Jan. 11 with a 4 p.m. tipoff.
