Another Competitive Week For Mustangs

The fall season continues to roll on for the Oakdale High School Mustangs. This past week, cross country, volleyball and girls tennis competed.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

The varsity girls team took first place on Saturday at the Frogtown Invitational event staged at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds and hosted by Bret Harte High School. Sixteen teams competed. Haleigh Humble placed first out of 92 runners. Humble competed the three-mile run at 19:15. Kassidy Fmura placed seventh overall at 20:27. Hannah Beth Norman just missed a top ten finish as she placed 11th overall at 21:29. Morgan Merzon placed 16th at 22:07. For the varsity boys it was a first-place team finish, out of 18 teams and 150 total racers. Dax Daley placed second overall at 16:07. Third place went to Caleb Cavanaugh at 16:36. Jackson Oliveira and Mason Oliveira placed 14th and 15th place and crossed the finish line at the same time of 17:49.

The junior varsity boys placed fourth place in a 13-team field. With 125 runners competing, Michael Freitas placed 16th overall at 20:06. Ean Sweeney placed 23rd overall at 20:45 and Gabe Archuleta placed 34th overall at 21:22 in the three-mile race. The frosh/soph boys also competed, and ran in a two-mile run. Abner Gonzalez placed sixth overall at 13:01 and Jose Buenrostro earned a top 40 finish at 32nd place at 14:29.

The teams will head to Mistlin Park in Ripon on Wednesday, Sept. 22 for the VOL #1 meet.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Wednesday evening, Sept. 15 the girls hosted Central Catholic in a Valley Oak League showdown. The Lady Raiders took the first two sets 25-20, 25-18. However, in the third set it was Oakdale who came away with the win as they won 25-15. Motivation appeared to be on Oakdale’s side as they led by four early on in the fourth set. Unfortunately for Oakdale, Central Catholic rallied and walked off the court as winners, with a thrilling 25-23 fourth set victory to win 3-1.

 

TENNIS

Oakdale’s girls tennis team was victorious over Weston Ranch on Tuesday, Sept. 14 and earned a win over Sierra on Thursday night. No final scores were reported. This week the girls host Manteca on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 3:30 p.m.

 

WATER POLO

Oakdale’s lone match of the week came on Tuesday, Sept. 21 when they hosted Turlock following The Leader’s press time. Oakdale returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 23 when they host Atwater. Water polo action begins at 4 p.m.
