Ross Elwood Marshall, 89, died on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

He was born on Sept. 25, 1923, in Ross, California to Martha Lee (Eastman) Marshall and Anthony Lawrence Marshall. He lived in Gustine, California a few years and then his family moved to Escalon, California, where he finished school, graduating from Escalon High School.

He enlisted into the Army Air Force on Oct. 31, 1942, and served on active duty, along with his brothers, during World War II. Upon receiving his honorable discharge on Nov.7, 1945, he returned to the home of his childhood, married Jean Noden, and together they were blessed with four children. His marriage to Jean ended in 1957. He married his second wife, El Wanda (Fallis) Avery in 1962, remaining on the family homestead where he farmed and lived out his days for the next 51 years.

Mr. Marshall loved to camp and hunt deer in the mountains near Sonora, and in the mountains of the Alsea Valley in Oregon, and even in the woods of Louisiana. Fishing was his other passion; whether it was trout fishing in Beaver Creek or salmon fishing off the coast of Oregon, he was happiest when he had a hook in the water. He was an avid rock hound, and enjoyed sharing his treasured rocks with a young friend and fellow rock hound in the last months of his life. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Oakdale.

Survivors include his children, Gary Marshall of Escalon, Gwen (Marshall) Loudenback of Waldport, Oregon, Wendy (Marshall) Cedars of Leesville, Louisiana; adopted son Lynn Marshall of Sequim, Washington and step-daughter Sharon Cravens of Modesto; 11 grandchildren, Kelly Butler of Greeley, CO, Joshua Marshall of Manteca, Holly Schrock of Monmouth, OR, Brandon Bruneau of Alsea, OR, Andy Cedars and Cory Cedars both of Leesville, LA, Shelley Roth of Roy, WA, Victoria Strauss of Buckley, WA, Tyler Marshall of London, England, Melissa Wortham and Shannon Sorentino, both of Modesto; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
