Lois Orr, 96, died Monday, Oct. 29 in Northridge.

She was born in Richmond, but soon moved to Oakdale with her family. She was the daughter of Joseph R. Roberts and Elise Griesner Roberts.

She attended Oakdale schools, Modesto Junior College, where she met her future husband, Ernest L. Orr, and San Francisco State College, where she received her teaching credential. She taught in Oakland before World War II, and later at Enslen Elementary School in Modesto and Cloverland Elementary School in Oakdale.

Mrs. Orr and her husband were the directors, and later owners of Shady Lawn Farm Summer Camp in Oakdale until it was sold in 1981.

She was one of the original members of Oakdale Community Sharing, a member of the United Methodist Church and Soroptimist International, all in Oakdale.

She received the Oakdale Citizen of the Year Award in 1985 and was one of 10 recipients of the Outstanding Woman of Stanislaus County in 1986.

She moved to Northridge in 1991 to be closer to family. There, she joined St. Stephen Presbyterian Church, Chatsworth Women’s Club, and the Cal State Northridge Fine Arts Council. She continued her life of community service at every opportunity, often selling her craft work to support various charities.

She is survived by her daughter, Judy Orr Sahm of Northridge; sister, Ruth Ayres of Santa Rosa; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Ernest L. Orr; and her parents.

A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen Presbyterian Church in Northridge on Saturday, Nov. 17. Burial will take place at on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. at Oaklawn Memorial Cemetery in Oakdale.
