The City of Oakdale announced via social media this past week that it has received a formal Site Plan Review Application for a proposed Walmart Neighborhood Market at 175 S. Maag Ave., the long-vacant site of the former Kmart store.

According to the city’s post on its official Facebook page, the proposal includes complete demolition of the former Kmart building and construction of a new, approximately 45,000-square-foot standalone structure. The design calls for enhanced architectural elements, raised parapets, and a drive-thru pharmacy.

“This will be a new standalone structure, not a renovation of the old facility,” city staff noted in the announcement.

The application, which includes proposed site plans and architectural elevations, is currently under internal review. It has been routed to applicable city departments and outside agencies for formal comment, as of this week.

Key features of the proposed development include:

A new building with updated architectural design;

Drive-thru pharmacy;

A total of 335 parking spaces, including electric vehicle (EV) charging stations; and

Enhanced landscaping and site layout improvements.

A ‘neighborhood market’ primarily features groceries including fresh produce and meat, dairy products and frozen foods, paper products and cleaning supplies, though they do not typically have clothing or toys.

The city anticipates the proposal will come before the Planning Commission for formal consideration in late summer or early fall.

City staff stated they “look forward to keeping the community informed as the project moves forward.”
