Two Mosquito Samples Test Positive For WNV
east side

The East Side and Turlock Mosquito Abatement Districts (MADs) recently confirmed the detection of West Nile Virus (WNV) in two mosquito samples from Stanislaus County. As of the end of July, WNV has been detected in 23 California counties with the WNV activity confirmed in seven humans, 49 dead birds, and 702 mosquito samples. Three human cases have been identified in Stanislaus County.

These WNV‐infected mosquitoes serve as a reminder of the ongoing threat of Mosquito‐borne diseases.

“Mosquito and virus activity has been lighter in many areas of the county this year; however, this WNV‐positive mosquito sample reminds us of the importance of being proactive in preventing mosquito breeding around our homes,” stated Turlock MAD General Manager, David Heft. “The recent higher temperatures accelerated the development of WNV in mosquitoes. We urge residents to use repellent when outside in the dawn and dusk hours and to tip and toss sources of standing water around their home.”

The MADs will continue with their surveillance programs identifying mosquito breeding sources and mosquito borne disease activity and treat according to their results. Residents can help by taking several precautions.

Dump or drain standing water where mosquitoes like to lay their eggs.

Defend yourself against mosquitoes by using repellants containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.

Avoid being outdoors at dusk and dawn when WNV carrying mosquitoes are generally most active.

Report Neglected Swimming pools to your local Mosquito Abatement District.

Use tight‐fitting door and window screens to keep mosquitoes from entering your home.

Contact your veterinarian for information on vaccinating equine against WNV.
