Hearts And Hands In Soil: Instilling A Sense Of Place
At a time when food system challenges are increasing due to the impacts of the climate crisis, such as our imminent summer of increased drought and wildfires, campus gardens offer a way to reconnect people to the source of their food and its importance to their health. Join panelists on Tuesday, May 11 for a virtual discussion about how campus gardens can be a tool for breaking down the barriers that impede social justice and provide a common language that transcends perceived differences by providing education in the growth of nutritious, affordable food, and green space.

Sophomore In Regional Vocal Competition
The spring semester is ending on a high note for Stanislaus State tenor Luca Mitchell. The sophomore and music major studying vocal performance won first place in his category for the 2021 Kristina Townsend Memorial Vocal Competition.
Professors Honored For Excellence
She’s been nominated for other faculty awards in the past, but for Stanislaus State Sociology Professor Ann Strahm to be honored for Outstanding Service in Faculty Governance seems most appropriate.
“It means a lot, because it means I am doing something effective and that is really good for all of the citizens of our University: students, faculty, staff, administration,” said Strahm, who is completing her 14th year at Stanislaus State. “I’m participating in ways that are meaningful, that work toward the goal of making sure we are a top-tier educational institution.”
Anita Pedersen-Pennock has also been recognized, earning the Outstanding Professor Faculty Award.
“At Stan State, I feel like I’m making a difference in these students’ lives. I’m helping someone with their building blocks to a truly better life for themselves,” said Pedersen-Pennock.
Using Incentives To Conquer Addiction
Having seen the effectiveness of incentive-based treatment for addiction during a two-year post-doctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, Assistant Professor of Psychology Shrinidhi Subramaniam is using that formula for a local study with Stanislaus State students contributing to the research. The team will offer small financial incentives to clients who have completed residential treatment at Stanislaus Recovery Center in Ceres and are transitioning to outpatient services. The research team seeks to enlist 30 patients for the pilot study.
Stan State Showcases Literacy Film ‘The Race’
Opera Modesto commissioned Stan State’s Deborah Kavasch and Linda Bunney-Sarhad to develop a youth opera that would be performed live in 2020. But when the pandemic hit, the project was turned into a film called “The Race,” based on five famous Aesop’s Fables. Filmed entirely in the Central Valley and premiered at The State Theatre in early April, “The Race” has won more than 50 laurels in international film festivals including Best Family Film from the Cannes World Film Festival. The film will be used internationally as a tool for literacy.
