A survivor, a bandit, and a war hero – all can be found among the gravesites at the Oakdale Citizens Cemetery at 701 E. J St., Oakdale – and each will be highlighted during the Oct. 3 Once Upon A Tomb cemetery walk.

It is a fundraiser for the cemetery; tickets are $25 through Eventbrite (with an additional small service fee) and there are multiple tour times available.

This marks the third year the historic tour has taken place in the cemetery and this week, we highlight the final three of six notable Oakdale citizens being featured this year.

LUCINDA RICHARDSON

Lucinda Richardson was a woman of strength and determination who made her mark during the rough and unpredictable days of early California. As the owner of the Lone Star House, she welcomed travelers from all walks of life, including a few whose stories would eventually become part of California legend. And while life at the Lone Star House wasn’t always easy, Lucinda faced situations with courage, quick thinking and knew when it was best to look the other way.

Veteran actress Elda Carmona is making her Once Upon A Tomb debut this year, utilizing her talent and years of acting experience to bring Lucinda Richardson’s story to life.

JOAQUIN MURRIETA

One of the most infamous and mysterious figures to emerge from California’s Gold Rush era, Joaquin Murrieta became associated with outlaw life, violence, and stories that blurred the line between fact and legend. His travels are said to have brought him through the area and to the Lone Star House, where some of the dark stories surrounding him still linger.

Bringing Joaquin Murrieta to life is Gene Gilton, making his Once Upon A Tomb debut this year. He is a veteran actor, having studies acting in college, and brings his talent and experience to portray one of the darkest characters in this year’s walk.

GROVER SEITZ

A World War I pilot with a love story that stretched all the way to France, Grover Seitz was young and seemingly had his whole life ahead of him. Grover returned home to California with plans for a future that would never come to be.

Tragically, his life was cut short … but to discover what happened, you’ll have to join in on the tour.

Returning for his third year with Once Upon A Tomb, having been part of the event since the beginning, Jacob Boss takes on Grover’s heartbreaking story, capturing the tragedy of a young man whose life ended far too soon.

The Oct. 3 cemetery walk begins with a 5 p.m. tour for those with mobility issues, followed by staggered tours at 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8 p.m., and 8:30 p.m.
