The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2. Note: Shifts are in 24-hour time periods, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Sept. 22 through Monday, Sept. 28. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, SEPT. 28
Battalion 2: Captain Zurilgen is working on closing the Spike Camp at Fort Hunter Liggett as part of the Plaskett Fire near Big Sur. He has been deployed as a Base Camp Manager since Sept. 5.
Crews completed weekly apparatus maintenance on all first-out apparatus.
Battalion 5: Crews trained in their territories on firefighting strategies and tactics, and conducted cleaning and maintenance at their stations.
12:03 p.m. – Engine 28, Engine 29 and Battalion 5 responded to a vegetation fire on Wakefield Drive along the railroad tracks. Additionally, during the extinguishment, another fire was reported further down the tracks in a field near Post Road. OES 4618 assisted with the additional fire and both fires were contained in about an hour.
SUNDAY, SEPT. 27
Battalion 2: Captain Zurilgen is assigned to the Plaskett fire and working as a base camp manager.
Battalion 5: Engine 27 conducted training on rope systems.
Battalion 5 attended Captains meetings at the RFTC.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 26
Battalion 2: Captain Zurilgen is assigned to the Plaskett fire and working as a base camp manager.
Crews across the battalion trained on multiple topics for Saturday drill day.
Engine 26 and Battalion 2 attended a child car seat event. The event provided car seats to individuals that needed new car seats or replaced old or damaged car seats. E26 crew assisted with the processing and filling out of paperwork as well as manpower for moving materials.
4:22 p.m. – Engine 26 responded to a traumatic injury on the football field at Riverbank High School. Due to the extent of injuries, the patient was transported to Memorial Medical Center landing zone and was flown out to a local pediatric hospital for further treatment.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s, conducted apparatus checks and Saturday station maintenance.
Engine 29 and Engine 28 conducted rope rescue training in Oakdale and Knights Ferry.
12:57 p.m. – Engine 27 and Battalion 5 responded to the 100 block of Oak Street for an unresponsive patient. Engine 27 arrived on scene to find a patient in cardiac arrest. Crews immediately started CPR and provided patient care on scene for roughly 20 minutes before regaining pulses. The patient was transported by Oak Valley Ambulance to Memorial Medical Center for further care.
FRIDAY, SEPT. 25
MST companies assisted with the procession for the two pilots killed in a helicopter accident on the Dome incident in Yosemite, as they were transported to Ceres Memorial Park.
Battalion 2: Captain Zurilgen is assigned to the Plaskett fire and working as a base camp manager.
Crews spent the day catching up on administrative duties and online training.
Battalion 5: 2 p.m. – Brush 28, OES 4617, OES 4618, B24, E9, WT27, WT6 and BC5 responded to a vegetation fire in the 10000 block of Alvarado in Oakdale. BC5 arrived on scene to one-eighth of an acre of grass on fire with a moderate rate of spread and one structure threatened. Crews quickly contained the fire to approximately one acre and prevented fire spread to the nearby residence. Crews remained on scene for roughly two hours for mop up.
THURSDAY, SEPT. 24
Battalion 2: Engine 26 and Inspector Sansing hosted a small group of students from a local homeschool at Station 26.
Battalion 5: Engine 27 conducted probationary firefighter training and task book signoffs.
BC5 worked on several proposed fuel reduction projects in the City of Oakdale.
WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 23
Battalion 5: Battalion 5 crews met up with Battalion 1 and 3 personnel and went over auto extrication. Crews reviewed how to stabilize and extricate victims from a vehicle accident.
BC5 checked in on the Tim Bell bridge project. Construction crews are making headway, but fire apparatus is still unable to pass through the area.
7:30 p.m. – MST personnel responded to the area of Lambuth and Valley Home roads for a possible vegetation fire. Crews arrived at scene and found a small field that had been on fire. The farmer had disked the field in extinguishing the fire. There was no further threat to anything else. The scene was turned back over to the farmer.
TUESDAY, SEPT. 22
Battalion 2: Captain Zurilgen is deployed to the Plaskett Fire as a base camp manager.
Battalion 5: Engine 28 conducted hose drills in their respective FMA, focusing on leader line evolutions.
