The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2. Note: Shifts are in 24-hour time periods, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Sept. 15 through Monday, Sept. 21. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, SEPT. 21
MST companies, Modesto Police Department and Ceres PD assisted the US Forest Service and CalFire with the procession for two pilots killed in a helicopter accident on the Dome incident in Yosemite.
Battalion 2: Captain Zurilgen is deployed to the Plaskett Fire as a base camp manager.
Crews completed Monday apparatus inspections.
Battalion 5: Crews trained in their territories on firefighting strategies and tactics, and conducted cleaning and maintenance at their stations.
Truck 5 assisted the OHS Fire Science Class with apparatus and equipment orientation.
SUNDAY, SEPT. 20
Battalion 2: Captain Zurilgen is assigned to the Plaskett fire and working as a base camp manager.
Crews spent the day catching up on administrative duties and online training.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s.
Crews completed mandated Target Solution assignments and conducted apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Engine 29 conducted rope rescue training in Knights Ferry.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 19
Battalion 2: Captain Zurilgen is assigned to the Plaskett fire and working as a base camp manager.
Battalion 5: Crews participated in Saturday’s Company Level drill day focusing on a variety of subjects such as ladders, trunk line and leader line evolutions, and drivers training.
9:17 a.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28 and Battalion 5 responded to the report of natural gas inside of a structure on Rivergate Drive in Oakdale. Battalion 5 arrived on scene and crews investigated. The house was checked with the gas monitor and no signs of natural gas were found. Engine 28 remained on scene until PG&E arrived to further check the home.
9:25 a.m. – Engine 27, Engine 26, Truck 5, Truck 1, Rescue 11, BC2, BC3, Chief 8 and Medic 1 responded to a vehicle accident with pin in, for a vehicle that entered a home on Lon Dale Road. Initial reports advised there were a total of five patients and an MCI Pre-Alert was started. Crews arrived on scene with one patient trapped in the vehicle and another patient inside the home. Crews extricated the patient from the vehicle and provided medical care on scene. A total of three patients were transported from the scene to local hospitals for further care.
FRIDAY, SEPT. 18
Battalion 2: 10:24 a.m. – Engines 3 and 24, Squad 32, Rescue 11, Trucks 1 and 5, and Battalions 2 and 3 responded to a technical rescue on Lake Road outside Hickman. A person was reported trapped in a trench approximately eight feet below ground. The technical rescue team worked diligently to shore the trench and remove the person. Unfortunately, the person was pronounced deceased. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office and Cal/OSHA are investigating.
Battalion 5: Crews received an operational update from BC 5.
Crews performed station and apparatus maintenance. They also took the time to get caught up with on line training.
BC5 participated in a table top exercise with the Haz Mat team and EJ Gallo personnel at a Gallo training facility. Personnel took the time to get to know each other prior to having a real life haz mat emergency.
THURSDAY, SEPT. 17
Battalion 5: Engine 27 met up with other companies and reviewed lifting heavy objects. Personnel used airbags to lift and move large concrete blocks.
BC5 joined other BC’s at Station 17 and reviewed the “Training Divisions” expectations and procedures.
3 p.m. – MST units responded to the 5000 block of Man O’ War Court for a working structure fire. Crews arrived at scene and found a large amount of fire showing from the front of the residence. A 1 ¾ hose line was deployed and within a few minutes, the fire was brought under control. Crews remained at scene and searched for hot spots. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
3:53 p.m. – Engine 27, Brush trucks 1, 12, 23, 24, Water Tenders 23, 27, and Battalion 2, along with a full response from CalFire, responded to a vegetation fire on Schell Road in the Knights Ferry area. BC4404 arrived first and reported 2 to 3 acres of grass on fire with a moderate rate of spread. Two tankers dropped retardant, slowing the fire’s spread. The fire was contained at just over 11 acres. CalFire is investigating the cause of the fire.
7:30 p.m. – Engine 26, E27, E28 and BC5 responded to Paterson Road and Bentley for a vehicle accident. E27 and E28 arrived and found two vehicles involved. All subjects were out of their vehicles. Two patients were transported with minor injuries. The scene was turned over to CHP.
WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 16
Battalion 5: Crews trained in their territories on firefighting strategies and tactics, conducted cleaning and maintenance at their stations, and worked on assigned Target Solution assignments.
TUESDAY, SEPT. 15
Battalion 2: Captain Zurilgen was released from the McCully incident in Oregon. He has been reassigned to the Plaskett fire.
Battalion 5: Crews trained in their territories on firefighting strategies and tactics.
Engine 27’s crew assisted the Oakdale High School Fire Science program in orientation of the apparatus house at their respective station.
