The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2. Note: Shifts are in 24-hour time periods, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, July 22 through Monday, July 28. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, JULY 28
Battalion 5: Crews completed Target Solutions assignments, performed company level training in their respective FMA and performed Monday apparatus checks and station maintenance.
3:15 p.m. – Engine 29, Engine 28, Engine 27, Quint 22, and Battalion 5 responded to an injury accident on Highway 120 just east of Lancaster Road. Engine 29 arrived on scene to a two-vehicle head on collision with the roadway blocked and checked for injuries. A total of three patients, with one pinned in a vehicle, were treated and transported from the scene with major injuries by ground and air ambulances. Traffic was detoured on to Orange Blossom Road during the incident.
SUNDAY, JULY 27
Chief Nicasio and Captain Beauchemin assisted in the Planning Section for the Central Valley Incident Management Team on the Boneyard Fire in Cal Fire TCU. They assisted with resource tracking, developing the Incident Action Plan, and Conducting the Operational Briefing for the Operational Period.
Chief Rice was deployed to the Boneyard Fire. Chief Rice was assigned to an Overhead position as a Division on the Fire working directly with Operations.
Battalion 5: Crews performed apparatus checks, station maintenance, completed Target Solutions assignments and performed company level training in their respective FMA.
Engine 28 and Engine 27 conducted rope rescue training at Fire Station 28.
12:10 p.m. – Engine 29, Engine 28, Quint 22 and Battalion 5 responded to a report of a vehicle off the roadway on Highway 120 and Lancaster Road. Engine 29 arrived on scene to find a single vehicle off the roadway on its roof and checked for injuries. Crews remained on scene to assist CHP with traffic control until the vehicle could be removed by the tow company.
SATURDAY, JULY 26
Battalion 2: 8:40 a.m. – Engines 24 and 4456 responded to LaGrange OHV Park for a downed motorcycle rider with moderate injuries, who was airlifted to a trauma center.
Battalion 5: Crews performed apparatus checks and station maintenance and completed Target Solutions assignments.
Crews performed company level training for Saturday Drill Day.
Cal Fire crews along with the fuel mitigation team continue to make good progress on the fuel reduction project at Kerr Park in Oakdale.
Central Valley IMT assisted at the Cal Fire Boneyard Incident in Tuolumne County. Members from the Planning and Logistics Sections assisted at the Cal Fire Emergency Command Center and at Baseline Logistics.
FRIDAY, JULY 25
Battalion 2: Battalion 2 companies trained at Modesto Reservoir on drafting and off-road driving.
5:18 p.m. – Engine 26 responded to a vegetation fire on Prestwick Drive and Atchison Street.
9:02 p.m. – Water Rescue 24, WR21, Engine 23, and BC2 responded to the 7-11 gravel plant on Yosemite Boulevard in Waterford for two juveniles that were last seen in the area on the river. They were located and returned to a parent without injury.
Battalion 5: 2:25 p.m. – Engine 28, Engine 29, and BC5 responded to a vehicle accident with injuries at Dodds Road and 26 Mile Road. Engine 28 arrived on scene with two vehicles involved and one patient with minor injuries. Engine 28 advised that they could handle, and the remaining balance could cancel.
4:09 p.m. – Engine 6/Water Tender 6, Grass 23/Water Tender 23, Engine 27, Brush 28, OES 4615, and BC5 responded along with a full vegetation response from Cal Fire TCU to a vegetation fire at Woodward Reservoir. Engine 27 arrived on scene of a small 5’x5’ area that had burned and was extinguished by locals. Engine 27 ensured the fire was out and cancelled the responding balance.
THURSDAY, JULY 24
Battalion 2: Crews rotated through quarterly EMS training.
Crews completed yard and exterior maintenance.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Companies rotated through Quarterly EMS training. Topics covered included policy review, changes to protocols and skills review.
Engine 28, Battalion 5 and Chief 2 hosted the Oakdale Chamber of Commerce Leadership Team for a tour of Station 28. Staff learned about the services MST provides, coverage areas, response to emergencies, apparatus used and how we partner with our communities.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 23
Battalion 2: Engine 23, Engine 26, and Quint 22 trained at Station 17 working on firefighter skills.
5:08 p.m. – Engine 24, Engine 23, Quint 22, CalFire Engine 4456, and BC2 responded to Yosemite and La Grange for a vehicle accident with person trapped. One patient was flown from the scene
Battalion 5: Engine 28 and Engine 27 trained on throwing ladders with their probationary firefighter in Oakdale.
TUESDAY, JULY 22
Battalion 5: 3:15 p.m. – OES4615 and BC5 were dispatched to a report of a vegetation fire on Orange Blossom Road in East Oakdale. BC5 arrived on scene and had approximately two acres burning in heavy fuels with a dangerous rate of spread with two large structures immediately threatened. Additional MCS resources (Grass 27, Brush 28, Grass 21, Grass 23, Brush 23 and BC2) were ordered, and Cal Fire sent a full response. OES4615’s quick actions saved both structures with only minor damage to the exterior of one. The fire jumped the river and at one point jumped Highway 108, but the spot fires were stopped. No other structures were lost. Additional resources began arriving and the Cal Fire air assets were essential in controlling the blaze. The fire was mapped at 12.9 acres and the cause was under investigation by Cal Fire officials.
