The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, June 3 through Monday, June 9. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, JUNE 9
Battalion 2: Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
11:39 a.m. – Engine 23 responded to assist a hiker at Waterford River Park. They located an injured hiker at the bottom of the cliff and requested Engine 24 and Battalion 2 to assist with extricating the injured hiker. Engine 23 assessed and treated the patient and then fire personnel used a stokes basket to carry her to a ground ambulance for transport.
Battalion 5: Battalion 5 crews completed weekly apparatus and equipment maintenance.
Engine 29 and Engine 7 completed annual pump testing provided by Fleet Maintenance.
Battalion 5 attended a Communications Workgroup meeting at Fire Station 17.
Crews conducted company level training.
SUNDAY, JUNE 8
Battalion 2: Crews completed company level training.
Companies completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
12:18 p.m. – Engine 26 responded to an unknown type fire on Langworth Road. They located a large pile of walnut hulls on fire. Engine 26 darkened down the fire and then turned the scene over to the property owner to overhaul the fire.
1:14 p.m. – Engine 23, Engine 24, and Battalion 2 responded to a report of a jet ski that exploded on Modesto Reservoir. Engine 24 arrived to find one jet ski in the reservoir and one patient on the shore. Engine 24 assessed and treated the patient and extinguished the jet ski. One patient with moderate injuries was transported by ground ambulance to Memorial Medical Center.
Battalion 5: Engine 27, Engine 28, Engine 29, and Truck 5 conducted low angle rope rescue training.
SATURDAY, JUNE 7
Battalion 5: Engine 27 worked on task book signoffs for their probationary firefighter with review of wildland firefighting ops, including progressive hose lays, hand line construction, tool maintenance and Wildland Urban Area Interface familiarization.
Engine 29 trained on ladders behind Station 29.
7:32 a.m. – Engine 29, Engine 28 and BC5 responded to the covered bridge in Knights Ferry for a female that had fallen on the trail and suffered a compound fracture of her right lower leg. Engine 29 arrived on scene, stabilized the patient, and splinted the leg, the E29 medic administered pain medication on scene and then packaged the patient to be carried out by crews. She was transported via ground ambulance to a local hospital.
FRIDAY, JUNE 6
The Modesto Graffiti Parade was held through downtown and up to McHenry Avenue. BC1 and BC3 attended the briefing held at MPD.
Battalion 2: 5:56 p.m. – Engines 26, 27, 28, 7, 9, Quint 22, Battalions 2 and 5 to Nevada Street in Riverbank for a working structure fire. Engine 26 arrived on scene with light smoke showing from a single-story residence. They found a smoldering mattress fire that had been put out by the residents. The mattress was removed, and the area overhauled. The FIU was notified.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Engine 29 trained on boat operations.
Engine 27 trained on vehicle operation and pump and roll with the OES Type 6 engine.
THURSDAY, JUNE 5
Battalion 2: 2:08 p.m. – Engine 26 and BC5 assisted the Escalon Fire Department on a vegetation fire on River Road in San Joaquin County. Crews helped control the fire and then remained on scene to assist with overhaul.
7:20 p.m. – Water Rescue 24, Engine 23, and BC2 responded for a water rescue at Turlock Lake inlet. One individual swept out by the current was stranded on an island. Boat 24 brought him to shore.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4
Battalion 2: Crews rotated through Station 22 for Masimo training.
Engine 26 worked on tools and equipment on 4618.
Apparatus maintenance was focused on Water Tenders and Boats.
Battalion 5: Engine 29 went to Station 30 for weekly maintenance.
Crews at Station 27 worked on getting the new Type 6 OES into service.
Crews trained on various skills in their respective FMA’s.
TUESDAY, JUNE 3
MST crews rotated through Search Training at the Bent Road acquired structure.
Battalion 2: 5:53 p.m. – Brush 24, Grass 23, Water Tender 23, and Battalion 2 responded to a vegetation fire near the water treatment plant in Waterford. Brush 24 was the first to arrive, and they reported a 20-by-50-foot area of the river bottom on fire between the treatment plant and the river. Crews were able to contain the fire to approximately a quarter of an acre and stopped it from spreading up the hillside to the houses along Riverside Road.
Battalion 5: Crews performed apparatus checks and station yard maintenance.
Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s and completed Target Solutions assignments.
6:55 a.m. – Engine 26, Engine 7, Q22 and Battalion 5 responded to a potential structure fire at the El Ranchito Restaurant in Riverbank. Engine 26 arrived on scene with light smoke showing and investigated. Engine 26 found a small fire in the restaurant that was out. Crews remained on scene for overhaul and to assist the Fire Investigation Unit with their investigation.
12:45 p.m. – Engine 28, Brush 24, Grass 4618, Brush 3, Engine and Water Tender 6, BC2 and a full response from CalFire responded for a report of a vegetation fire on Orange Blossom and Olive Road. Crews arrived on scene to find a vegetation fire burning on the hillside. With the assistance of CalFire Aircraft, crews were able to hold the fire to roughly five acres. Companies remained on scene for roughly three hours for mop up.
Grass 27, Water Tender 27, Brush 28, and Battalion 5 worked on mopping up walnut hulls from a fire a couple of days ago behind Burchill Court in Oakdale. Crews will continue to monitor the fire and extinguish hot spots.
