Oakdale Officer, Off Duty, Injured By Own Weapon
opd

Authorities reported this past week that an Oakdale police officer, who was off duty at the time, was injured on Jan. 18, 2022 around 7 p.m. when his weapon accidentally discharged.

According to the Oakdale Police, the off-duty officer was at a hospital in Sacramento visiting with family. At one point, when handling his firearm, the weapon accidentally discharged, causing injury. The officer underwent surgery following the shooting.

Oakdale Police officials said they will not be releasing the name of the officer, as it is a “confidential personnel matter.”

The officer, they added, has not yet returned to work – at least as of Monday afternoon, Jan. 24 – but that was by choice and not due to the injury. The officer is expected to make a speedy and full recovery.

The incident was initially investigated by the Sacramento Police Department and was deemed an accident. No one else was injured during this incident.

The Oakdale Police Department is also conducting an internal investigation to determine why and how the officer was shot with his own gun.
