Modesto Man Drowns At Woodward Reservoir
Stanislaus County Sheriff

Stanislaus County Coroner’s Department officials have released the identity of a man who drowned Saturday, Aug. 19 at Woodward Reservoir.

The victim was listed as Carlos Evans, 55, of Modesto. He was reportedly at the reservoir with family members and was kayaking about 100 yards from shore when officials say he rolled the kayak and went into the water.

Modesto Fire Department crews and Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the scene shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday, said officials.

According to the fire department, multiple units responded to Woodward after receiving the report of a male that flipped a kayak and was underwater. A unified command was set up on scene and fire and law enforcement units searched by boat and by helicopter for over an hour with no results. The scene was then turned over to the sheriff’s department and the body was recovered by a dive team a few hours after the man went under the water.

The victim, authorities said, was not wearing a life jacket.

A July drowning at Woodward claimed the life of a man who was swimming at the reservoir – also not wearing a life jacket – and could not make it back to shore.
