Local Pump Prices Push Past $4 Level

Modesto gas prices have risen 2.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $4.03/gallon as of Monday, May 24, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Gas prices in Modesto are 22.5 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.40/gallon higher than a year ago.

The national average price of gasoline has fallen 1.9 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.02/gallon on May 24. The national average is up 14.0 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.07/gallon higher than a year ago.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $3.73/gallon Monday while the most expensive was $4.49/g, a difference of 76.0 cents per gallon. The lowest price in the state on May 24 was $3.43 while the highest was $5.56, a difference of $2.13/gallon.

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back ten years show the highest Modesto price reported in 2012, coming in at $4.25 per gallon and the lowest in 2020, at $2.63 per gallon. Nationwide, the highest price recorded in the last 10 years for this week was $3.82 in 2011 and the lowest in 2020, at $1.95 per gallon.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $4.03/gallon, up 2.2 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.01; Oakland - $4.21, up 2.8 cents from $4.19/gallon; and San Jose - $4.19/gallon, up 3.4 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.16.

“In the lead up to Memorial Day, we haven’t seen gas prices come down much, though with oil’s recent move lower, we should start to see more drops at the pump materialize in the days ahead,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. “For those hitting the road, we should see prices inch lower in the coming week through at least Memorial Day, so motorists need not rush to fill their tanks as the drop in oil prices should manifest into lower gas prices as we begin the summer driving season.”
