With temperatures peaking just below 100 degrees on Saturday, it was the perfect time for opening day at the Royse Memorial Plunge at Dorada Park.

Add to that the fact that ‘Opening Day Splash’ was offered for free, and you have the ingredients for a capacity crowd enjoying a day poolside. There were games, water safety activities and swimming lesson evaluations and registration in addition to the free swim.

Swim lessons begin Monday, June 13 and there will be lessons throughout the summer. Those interested can register at City Hall, 280 N. Third Ave., with group and private lessons offered for all ages and all swimming levels.

Open swim at the pool is offered Monday through Thursday, noon to 4 p.m., with Friday, Saturday and Sunday hours noon to 5 p.m. and a Friday night swim from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Admission fees for youth 13 and under are $1; adult 14 and over is $2 at the Open Swim. Punch cards are also offered, $15 for 20 youth visits, $35 for 20 adult visits.

The pool features adult programs as well with lap swim and water aerobics Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon and 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in addition to Fridays from 11 a.m. to noon.

The pool is open seven days a week now through Aug. 5; weekends only Aug. 6 through Sept. 4.

For more information, contact the city’s Recreation Department at 209-845-3571. The pool itself is at 555 N. Third Ave., adjacent to Dorada Park.
