Valley Home members of the Oakdale Garden Club, Beverly Berridge, and Glenn & Laura Burghardt, joined other members and representatives of the Knights Ferry Garden Club in hosting the Valley Lode District meeting on February 9th. The event was held at the Masonic Center in Oakdale which through the artistic hands of Club members was turned into a tropical paradise for the event which was attended by 91 members of the many clubs which make up the district. Rain threatened the arrival of guests. However Mother Nature, in the spirit of the tropical theme for the luncheon soon gave way and welcomed guests with sunshine.
Due to an unforeseen need to assist in preparing the luncheon menu, Garden Club president, Brenda Peterson asked former Valley Lode District Director Glenn Burghardt, to open the meeting and introduce current Valley Lode District Director Chelsea Wilson who presided over the business portion of the meeting. Guest speaker for the event was Darrel Voortman who offered an interesting insight into orchard pollination by bees, whose boxed hives are a familiar sight in orchards at this time of the year.
Décor for the event featured blooming Orchids, Bromeliads and Antheriums which centered the luncheon tables, while large lush potted tropical plants lined the walls of the hall, leading up to a tinkling bamboo fountain. A large backdrop of a tropical beach and ocean added to the décor for the event. Oakdale and Knights Ferry Garden Club members got into the spirit of the occasion as many were in their best tropical attire for the event.

The latest word received on the Valley Home PTC upcoming 2nd Annual Bunko Night scheduled for March 12th is that tickets for the fun filled evening are booming. If you have not purchased your tickets for the event you may give Lisa Jones a call at 840-3178. Tickets are available for a donation of $20 for dinner and tons of fun! Word is that the Bunko committee is working hard gathering donations of items and card tables and chairs for the night of the event.
We offer a reminder that the winner of the Annual Jog-A-thon shirt design contest will also be announced that same evening. Entries for the contest must be in by Friday.

The regular monthly meeting of the Valley Home MAC is tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Valley Home School Library. The agenda is full of community reports and updates, a special order of business regarding service coverage of the Oakdale Rural Fire Protection District, and CEQA Referral regarding the Waste Disposal permit that is still under consideration by the County Board of Supervisors. This will be a meeting that you do not want to miss as information will be disseminated and discussion will be held on the continuing project of saving the historic Valley Home Library building. Be there so you can present your opinion on the many items that will be discussed.
The “Ground Hog” dinner was great fun. After eating the ground hog and other delicious items, the raffle of the “White Elephants” began. There were 102 items, some good, bad or ugly. It was a lot of fun!

Knights Ferry Garden Club, co-sponsored with Oakdale Garden Club, the Valley Lode District Winter Meeting in Oakdale. It was a Hawaiian theme with the KFGC doing the breakfast snacks and registration. There were 91 in attendance on a rainy Tuesday. The speaker for the day spoke on Bees. Elaine Holt from KFGC won two lovely prizes!

Knights Ferry Grammar School Foundation and the Knights Ferry Parent/Faculty Club are sponsoring the annual Silent/Live Auction and dinner. This year it will be March 27th. They need donations for the auction. Each class is making something for the live auction. This is the big fundraiser for the school. Last year they raised about $18,000 for software, library books, playground equipment, PE programs, computers, and classroom curriculum support. With the budget crunch, and more crunches coming from the State, this effort is very important to the school children. Tickets are on sale ($35.00) at the school or call Shelli Borba at 848-1507. Also Shelli is the one to contact if you have items for the Silent Auction.

At the Knights Ferry School Board Meeting, Pastor Leverne Tanis from the Knights Ferry Community Church presented the school with a check for $1,600.00 to purchase disaster kits for each classroom. Superintendent Cheryl Griffiths told of the up-coming Dr. Seuss read-a-thon. On March 2nd the public is invited to read to the children. Call the school 881-3382 if you are interested in reading.

Welcome to the world Emma Grace Currie, born during the Super Bowl on February 7th. She was 5 pounds 15 ounces and 19 inches long. Proud first time parents are Kate and Graeme and proud Knights Ferry Grandparents are Michael and Maureen McKibban. Maureen went to Boston (cold!) to help with the new family.
