A Sonora man died as a result of injuries sustained in a crash over the Memorial Day weekend.

On Monday, May 26, at approximately 10:40 a.m., the California Highway Patrol received a call of a traffic crash on State Route 4, east of Dunton Road. Emergency personnel arrived on scene and located a Toyota SUV overturned approximately 300 feet north of Highway 4. The driver of the Toyota, a 28-year-old male from Sonora, was located a short distance from the vehicle. Unfortunately, the driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Noah McCafferty, 28, of Sonora, releasing his identity on Tuesday morning.

According to the preliminary CHP investigation, indications are that McCafferty was traveling eastbound on SR-4, east of Dunton Road. For unknown reasons at this time, he turned the Toyota in an unsafe manner to the left, allowing it to leave the north road edge. The Toyota continued in a northeasterly direction and overturned an unknown amount of times before coming to rest on its roof. The driver was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle.

Due to its location and distance from the roadway, it is still unknown what time the actual crash occurred. It is unknown at this time if drugs and/or alcohol contributed to this collision.

The CHP also issued a reminder to all motorists that seatbelts, when worn properly, have the ability to save your life when involved in a traffic crash.
