As people from around the world try and grasp the devastation of the Maui fires, many organizations, businesses, as well as individuals are doing their part to offer aid and assistance amidst the disaster.

Former Oakdale resident McKenzie Sluggett, currently a resident of Kihei, Maui has experienced firsthand the fear of the fires as her own home was in jeopardy on Aug. 8, 2023.

Described by her family as “No stranger to helping people,” Sluggett, along with hundreds of others jumped into action to help those in need.

The former Oakdale resident wishes not to be the center of attention, but rather a vessel to continue awareness as the devastation will take many months to recover. Currently she and a group of friends are part of a boat run effort of supplies to Kihei Boat Ramp.

“I cry every day at the devastation I see. The incinerated buildings and cars and bodies of people who did not get out of this firestorm,” she said via e-mail. “But then I wipe away the tears and get back to work, whatever I can do to help all those who cannot help themselves … right now that is what I need to do.”

Sluggett’s mom Melanie recently arrived in Kihei to help with relief efforts. The two women are currently requesting donations of two-way radios, first aid supplies, women’s feminine products and adult Depends of all sizes. Financial donations are also being requested for the La’Akea Village Program. Cash donations will help supplement the food budget for the group home, as the usual twice a week Food Bank appointments have been temporarily suspended. People can donate directly to laakeavillage.org/donate.
