Top Spellers Headed For County Contest

Top spellers from area schools will compete in Stanislaus County Elementary Spelling Championship today, Nov. 7, at Johansen High School, 641 Norseman Drive, Modesto. The Elementary Spelling Championship is for children in fourth through sixth grades.

The Junior High Spelling Championship, for those in seventh and eighth grades, is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 14 at the Petersen Event Center, 720 12th Street, Modesto. Sponsored by the Stanislaus County Office of Education, both events are open to the public and begin promptly at 5p.m.

Schools or districts participating in this year’s Elementary Spelling Championship include: Oakdale, Ceres, Chatom, Denair, Empire, Grace Lutheran, Hart-Ransom, Hickman, Hughson, Keyes, Modesto City, Newman-Crows Landing, Our Lady of Fatima, Paradise, Patterson, Riverbank, Sacred Heart, St. Stanislaus, Salida, Stanislaus Union, Sylvan Union, Turlock, and Waterford.

Oakdale's Magnolia Elementary School spelling bee winners are sixth grader Jenny Reeves, first; fourth grader Ava Merchant, second; and fourth grader Jaiden Grivette, third. Cloverland Elementary School spelling bee winners are fourth grader William Reyes, first place; sixth grader Jaime Cuevas, second; and fourth grader Alyssa Redd, third. Fair Oaks Elementary School spelling bee winners are Samantha Victorio, first place; Jason Pereyra, second; and Jensen Mauchley, third. Spelling Bee winners from Sierra View Elementary School are Blake Herrington, first place; Madison Koski, second; and Christian Capuno, third.

Junior high spelling contenders consist of students from the following schools: Oakdale Junior High School, which is sending its spelling bee winners, eighth grader Taryn Lane, first; and seventh graders Brian Anglim, second; and Russell Pabalan, third; Blaker-Kinser Junior High, Cesar Chavez Junior High, Connecting Waters Charter, Creekside Middle, Denair Middle, Glick Middle, Grace Lutheran, Hanshaw Middle, Hart-Ransom, Hart-Ransom Charter, Keyes Charter, Mountain View, Our Lady of Fatima,

Prescott Senior, Riverbank Language Academy, Ross Middle, Sacred Heart, St. Stanislaus, Salida Middle, Spratling Middle, Turlock Junior High, Ustach Middle & Walnut Grove.

The top two spellers in the Elementary Spelling Championship will represent Stanislaus County at the state competition in Stockton on April 20, 2013. The top two spellers in the Junior High Spelling Championship will represent Stanislaus County at the state competition in San Rafael on May 11, 2013. The third place speller in each event will serve as an alternate.
