Card Use Supports Academic Boosters

It’s as easy to use as a credit card, a simple swipe will funnel a portion of money to a cause that supports students at Oakdale High School in their academic pursuits, but it’s nothing extra out of your pocket.
Oakdale High School’s Academic Boosters club President Jill Clayton reported that the Academic Boosters, as well as several other booster clubs and schools in Oakdale, have registered their organizations in a program with Save Mart Supermarkets where three percent of a shopper’s grocery purchases goes to one of those clubs through the use of a special card called the S.H.A.R.E.S. Card.
Each organization has their own card that they distribute to community supporters, just contact the organization for more information to obtain a card. To get a S.H.A.R.E.S. Card to support the OHS Academic Boosters, contact Clayton via e-mail at claytoncompound@yahoo.com or by phone at (209) 988-0214.
Clayton said she wants to promote awareness about Academic Boosters. The club signed up for the fundraising program last school year, and through it has raised more than $2,400 to date. She said they met their goal with the S.H.A.R.E.S. program that first year. This year, the second year in the program, she said they are already on track in the first quarter to meet what they made during the entire year last year.
“I would love to raise $3,000 [in a year], which is certainly attainable,” she said.
The Academic Boosters club has helped financially with the OHS Academic Decathlon teams, Science Olympiad teams, scholarships, and more.
“The more we make, the more we can move into other areas, such as [funding] SAT/ACT prep courses, increased scholarships…,” Clayton said.
She suggests that shoppers should put the S.H.A.R.E.S. Card near whatever type of payment they use at the grocery store so they don’t forget to swipe it at the time they pay. For example, check writers should keep the card in their checkbook, debit or credit card users should keep it with that specific card, cash users can keep it in the cash part of their wallet.
“Save Mart has always been supportive to Oakdale as a community and the schools. And also Mike Morino, the manager, who has been proactive,” Clayton added.
She also said that the cards can be used at any Save Mart, Food Maxx, Lucky, or S-Mart Foods stores to benefit the OHS Academic Boosters program.
