The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department reported on Monday, Feb. 24 that a body was found at the Horseshoe Recreation area, located on Orange Blossom Road just east of Oakdale.

The body was discovered by three individuals who were walking in the area on Wednesday, Feb. 19, on their way to go fishing. They immediately called 911 and emergency crews responded. The witnesses stated they did not know who the victim was but it was clear he was deceased when they found him.

The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Juan Jose Calvillo, 40, of Turlock and formerly of Oakdale. According to the coroner, Calvillo suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

It is unknown why the sheriff’s department held information regarding this case until Monday, five days after the body was discovered.

Additionally, details on the nature of the gunshot wound or type of incident – self-inflicted suicide or suspected homicide – are not being released.

Detectives and media representatives of the sheriff’s department did not return calls by press time Tuesday for The Leader.

Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department Detectives continue to work the case and follow up all leads.
